Q. I began taking celery seed extract capsules six months ago for gout. Within a day, all foot pain was gone. A blood test six weeks later showed normal levels of uric acid. I take two capsules each morning. It's a miracle, as far as I'm concerned.
A. Gout is an inflammatory condition in which crystals of uric acid precipitate out of the blood and build up in the joints. This causes excruciating pain and swelling.
Celery seed was a traditional treatment for rheumatism. Ethnobotanist James Duke, PhD, author of The Green Pharmacy, attests that celery seed extracts have helped him ward off gout attacks.
Many other readers tell us that sour cherries can also help against gout. One reader reported: "I used tart cherries to cure a gout attack and it worked. The real news is that the pain from osteoarthritis of the hip joint diminished also."

My knee is delighted to learn that your hip was helped by celery seed extract; I'll try some! I often see recommendations to consume the whole plant or fruit/seed rather than an extract or derivative. In the case of celery, how much of the natural vegetable would be required to be the equivalent of a dose of the extract? What about consuming celery seeds?
I have been trying to find celery seed extract capsules for a friend. Extract to me means a liquid but all I can find is a capsule with celery seed powder. Is this right?
PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: THE POWDER MIGHT BE A DRIED EXTRACT.
Has anyone used Celery for Rheumatoid Arthritis? I would like to know if this works for RA. Thank you
Where can I get celery seed capsules?
I have suffered with what I was told by my GP as arthritis in my big toe for about five years now until I was told by a clinician that it sounded like gout. I was advised to try celery seed to relieve the pain. I have since started taking the celery seed tablets and the pain in my foot has decreased considerably.
I have been taking water pills prescribed by my doctor for blood pressure. My ankles were quite swollen up even when taking the water pills. Also have had bouts of Morton's Neuroma in my right foot. I started taking supplements of celery seed extract (75mg capsule twice a day) and have been taking them for two months now. Both the swelling and the Morton's Neuroma are totally gone!
I have suffered with gout now 2-3 times a year for about 4 years. It ramped up in 2009 and I was down several times with my toe and the outside of my foot. Someone told me about celery seeds, and I'm here to testify. 2 tablets 4 times the 1st day and 1/2 way through the 2nd day, my attack was gone. I drink a lot of beer, but now I wash down celery seeds with it. Don't believe me...try it yourself!
Celery seed capsules sound like a great idea, the comments already published are a testament to the product. They must have some properties that helps cure gout inflammation though I have not heard how or what celery seed are comprised.
I will have to look into celery seeds.
How many milligrams was each celery seed tablet that you took?
Celery seeds work for my gout. Period. The seeds calm me down so much that I need to take them after I run or it is like running through sleep. And, oddly, being older I am a male prone to getting up at night to pee. I believe that the celery seeds have shrunk the old prostate? I take a pinky nail size dollop of the seeds and just chew them up after I run. And these are just regular celery seeds purchased at the grocery store.
Further to p.b.n.'s comments of April 15: I first posted on this subject last September (top of this list). After 7 months I am happy to report: this stuff works for me. Same as p.b.n., I just munch on a fingernail-size pinch of regular grocery store seeds. I have an arthritic knee which, while unlikely to cure itself, has stabilized: no nagging pain and reasonable mobility. It improved greatly when I started the celery seeds. I hadn't thought about whether it was also impacting my prostrate BPH; the fact that I haven't thought about it in months makes me speculate that it may have helped there as well. I'm not aware of any downside: try 'em!
Does celery seed affect the kidneys? I have PKD and have to be careful what I take, but I do get gout occasionally and would like to try celery seed if it won't be a problem.
Can one just eat a celery stalk a day to help with gout and/or Morton's neuroma instead of taking the extract capsule? I do not eat celery at all but if it helps or cures Morton's neuroma then I'll definitely start eating more of it.
PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: WE DON'T KNOW. IT MIGHT BE WORTH A TRY. IF YOU DO TRY IT, LET US KNOW IF ONE STALK DAILY WORKS.
4-6 stalks of celery a day--try to get organic (pesticide free).
I checked out the celery seed extract story to see if there was any proof behind the claims and was surprised to find that studies have been done on this. Actually Celery is diuretic, diuretic drugs are any drug that elevates urination levels. This aids in removing uric acid from the body.
Tests have shown to considerably decrease pain in gout sufferers.
How long does it take for celery extract to become noticeably effective? Is celery extract the same as celery seed extract?
I don't have direct experience of using celery seeds, but the more you read these days the more you cannot get away from the fact that many people are discovering natural foods have quite substantial healing properties.
I have a keen interest in detoxing and it never fails to surprise me that eating a very strict vegetable based diet for a few weeks remove ALL of my aches, pains and moans.
It's great to read stories like this where someone has discovered a natural alternative to filling ourselves up on prescription and chemical drugs.
I bought mine at a health food store.
I just bought some celery seed at health food store. My husband has been suffering with a gout attack for almost a week. He is walking with crutches and his foot is so swollen it is purple.. I sure hope this helps. Will update later..
I too can sing the praises of celery seed, since taking it about two years ago I haven't had a recurrence of the dreaded GOUT.
Checking in to see if celery seeds worked for your husband. I hope so. Have gout in my ankle now - really hard to get around and I cannot afford not to work!
I found celery seed at WHOLE FOODS. Seems to work well for gout!
Celery seeds capsules do an excellent job for my gout.
I am more free in eating and the attacks if there is any are very mild.
I take one cap three times daily sometimes go 4 capsules per day. I am on them for 2 years now. They changed my life totally.
I am distributing information about Celery seeds widely. I am saying from my heart. It is for god's sake. believe me.
I read about celery seed here and began taking a half teaspoon a day and just washing it down with water. It took care of my gout within the day. After a few months I had a checkup with lab tests. Whether or not it is related, my cholesterol was lowered 20 points. All I did differently was the celery seed daily.
I am currently in the middle of a major gout attack. This is the second in two months. Last month I went through a cycle of prednisone which cleared it up. I am not sure which was worse the gout or the prednisone. The gout reoccurred within a week. It is centered in my left knee and radiates up and down my entire leg from foot to hip. I am now starting to take colcrys to see if it will work.
Today I will start taking celery seed, and I will be ordering a celery seed extract. My gout is bad enough to immobilize me completely. I will report back over time regarding my experience.
CELERY SEEDS WORK!!!
I had my first attack some 10 years back while on the Atkins Diet. Too much protein for my system to tolerate. Later attacks have come 2-3 times yearly. Several months ago, at a yard sale for a quarter, I purchased "The Green Pharmacy" by Dr. Dukes. This "Bible" of herbal remedies has been a God send!
Within days of taking celery seeds (4 daily the first week and 2 after) the gout has NOT returned. One exception did happen this week after eating about a dozen fresh shrimp. Swelling started the next morning so I took four tablets that day and all minor swelling was gone within 24 hours! Trust me it works and being Irish I still like my beer.
Hi T.Y
I also have Dr. Dukes "The Green Pharmacy," it's a great book. I am interested in taking celery seeds to help lower my high blood pressure. I am curious to know how many milligrams are the tablets you're taking?
My 92 year old Mom began having excruciating ankle pain about 4 months ago after standing up out of bed one morning. The pain has been more or less constant for the last 4 months. We had been to five doctors, including 3 podiatrists, a chiropractor and an emergency room visit where she had some bad effects from the 50 oz of Contrast that she drank for the CT Scans which she is still recovering from.
Anyway, they all basically said the ankle was severe osteoarthritis and various other things like plantar fascitis. Then while reading an article I noticed a Google text ad for gout a few weeks ago and clicked on it. They were using celery seed extract for gout. after searching celery seed extract and gout, I found this web page about gout.
Now after a couple weeks and 60 or so celery seed extract (Solaray brand) capsules later, Mom says she has no ankle pain although still some soreness on the bottom of her heel and an occasional shooting pain into her big toe, but overall a very good curative effect for the celery seed extract. It took a week or two for the celery seed extract to take effect, but she takes 4 capsules per day (say one capsule every 6 hours), including one in the night instead of the ibuprofen which we both wanted her off of because of the reputed possible side effects.
Well, the celery seed extract is working very well and this was a very painful situation in the ankle. She is not walking yet but at least the pain is gone as long as she takes the celery seed extract and stays off of the foot. She also takes a small swallow of black tart cherry concentrate with the 3 celery seed extract doses during the day.
Somewhere I saw that gout can be not only in the big toe, but also in the ankle, knee or hip. We had tried the PEMF Therapy for several weeks which is electromagnetic which helped the swelling and pain, but is $35 for a 30 minute session and the PEMF machine was 30 miles away and inconvenient and painful for her to travel to. We also tried an ankle wrap with 16 of the 13,000 gauss magnets in it but it didn't help at all. The chiropractor tried a laser machine, ultrasound and did some adjustments but it was only of minor help. Another podiatrist used wraps for several weeks but they were only marginally helpful. The celery extract wins hands down.
Hi Gracer
I am pleased to read about your mother response to Celery seeds tablets. Celery seed tablets does help lots of things including Gout.
It helps women in the pre menopausal age to get adequate regular periods.
It calms nerves.
Is Celery really good for someone who has gout? How many stalks of celery do you need to take? How many weeks or days can you see result of the effectiveness of the celery?
PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: THE RECOMMENDATION IS FOR CELERY SEED EXTRACT RATHER THAN STALKS OF CELERY. DR. JAMES DUKE HAS SUGGESTED FOUR STALKS OF CELERY A DAY, THOUGH.
Hi! I read your comment about celery. My husband has a gout and I haven't really tried the celery as a remedy. Is it really effective? How many days do you see the effect of taking the celery. Did you make it as a juice or you just ate the celery stalk? Has your gout been totally eliminated?
PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: DR. JAMES DUKE HAS LONG RECOMMENDED CELERY OR CELERY SEED FOR GOUT. YOUR HUSBAND MIGHT TRY EATING 3 OR 4 STALKS A DAY TO SEE IF IT HELPS.
Mich
I take 3-4 per day and have for the past four to five months. TRUST ME... CELERY SEEDS WORK! No gout problems at all. It took almost a month taken daily to rid me of the gout. I now eat, drink and exercise with no pain. Try it. What can you lose? I do eat celery stalks with the pills often... T.Y.
Hi
It is effective,it has to be taken as tablets, each of 600 milligram three times daily with abundance of water. Within 2 weeks you would notice the difference. It changed my life look in the high street for natural food stores (am not allowed to give the name).
Good luck
Just an update to say that the celery seed extract (CSE) capsules replaced the Ibuprofen like we had hoped with my Mom's 5 months of ankle pain. She has been taking the CSE for 5 weeks, about 2 capsules daily, one around breakfast and the other capsule around lunch or later in the day.
We noticed the CSE helping within the first week or two, or earlier. I still can't believe all of the 5 doctors that I took her to never even mentioned gout, but only arthritis or plantar fascitis. I luckily stumbled upon a Google text ad the said "gout cure," which talked about celery seed extract or celery seeds for gout pain.
Maybe there is an arthritis component with her gout, but she needed pain relief very badly, which only the CSE provides in a meaningful way.
She still cannot put weight on the ankle but I did read about a fatty acid called cetyl myrestoleate (CM) which apparently helps mobility and range of motion in arthritis.
I have used celery seeds for my gout problem which has affected me for about 8 yrs.
I took celery seed and crushed into a powder form.
I have been taking 1teaspoonful and boil in 2 glasses of water.
I drink half a glass of the mixture every morning.
I have done it for 2 weeks and I have improved very well.
I think the celery seed extract capsule smells gross, but it helped me a lot. Even though every time I hold it, the smell is still in my hand it's worth it to get the gout away. Now I could finally sleep without the pain.
I'm a roofer and thought I'd broken my toe one day, went to hospital and doctor told me I was in the gout club, I've tried every thing and let me tell you only one thing works and that's celery seed extract 3 tabs a day and plenty of water 2-3 ltrs a day. No more gout and you can eat what you like, but don't eat to late at night before you go to bed, leave at least 2 hours so your food can digest. As they sing at chelsea CELERY CELERY.
Would anyone know if CSE can help with the awful pain of fibromyalgia? Thanks
I have had several gout attacks in my life. They started in the big toe of my right foot (when I was 45) and have affected other joints since. At first they were few and far between and were treated with the usual array of drugs (Indomethacin Naproxen Colchicine etc...) But over time the pain from the attacks would begin to linger in low levels even after the crippling aspect was subdued.
I am now 53. I had a severe attack this past spring which left me crippled for almost 12 weeks. At first I went the Colchicine route and it was fine for a while but the pain returned in full force as soon as I stopped.
Then, being desperate I gave in and went the Prednisone route, but the gout recurred two weeks after (although to lesser extreme). It was still very uncomfortable to live with the level of pain I was in though.
A friend told be high doses of Folic acid are effective and I began taking that as a supplement. There were some noticeable side effects but it did seem to help and the pain was reduced to the point where it was just annoying.
I have just learned of the Celery seed approach to gout pain and I am now on my seventh day taking two 600mg tablets in the AM and one tablet in the PM. The effect was immediate and dramatic, the pain is almost completely gone and it is clearly a result of the celery seed. I am inclined to continue with a lower dose of folic acid just the same because I do think it has an anti-inflammatory effect.
I am just wondering if anyone had any comments on the interaction of the two or if they have ever even heard of the Folic acid angle. I have not experienced any bad effect thus far. I should mention I ran out of folic acid a couple of days ago and the celery seed does seem to be working very well on its own.
Hi Fred
I am very happy to your response to celery seeds tablets (600mg /tablet three times daily) which is not surprising at all to be honest.
Remember to drink like a fish or a camel,at least 3 liters per day.
Avoid or minimize eating internal organs like liver.
Celery seeds tablets do help women in getting regular periods.
Again I am very happy and thanks for your detailed feedback.
I have been taking Allopurinol 2 times a day 100mg and just recently like yesterday my ankle have been hurting me. Since I have been taking this I have not had a problem at all. I'm wondering does that mean my uric acid is up because I have been doing what is required mostly to keep my sugar under control because I am a type 2 diabetic. I don't know what else would cause this to happen. But I am going to try the celery capsules.
Celery Seeds work!! I am 43 and have been fighting high Uric Acid since my first attack 8 years ago. Everything I had tried from ACV, Cherries, Green Tea, etc. are all things for attacks. Nothing worked for every day maintenance. I drink a minimum of 100 oz. of high PH water a day and still have issues. I had a small attack this week on my right ankle.
Went to the magic Google box again and found this site. Celery seeds, who knew. Foot had pain but still could walk. Felt like a twisted ankle. Within 90 minutes of chewing celery seeds, pain is almost all gone. I have noticed the trips to the bathroom have increased as Celery seed is a diuretic but damn. I am impressed.
From now on, celery seed extract capsules will be a regular daily supplement.
Thanks guys
Every reply here claims to have long term bouts of Gout but only started taking Celery seed in the last few weeks or few months or even few days. Has anybody seen long term results? Greater than a year? 3 years? 5 years? Just curious if it really works or is this new condition I've been diagnosed so desperate that everyone falls in love with a new idea. I've heard all the stories about the miracles of sour cherries and Gout. When I looked into it... it was a study of 10 women. The internet would have us believe that it was the entire population of gout sufferers. Is Celery Seed the new sour cherry cure?
People's Pharmacy response: No studies at all of celery seed that we know of, but Dr. Duke has reported long-term success.
Kevin, Celery seed is an herb, herbs have been used for thousands of years to treat and heal health conditions. One thing very few people think about is the question "Where do the pharmaceutical companies get their raw material to produce their drugs?" The answer is, most of them come from leaves, flowers, berries, roots, tree bark, in other words out of the earth, "HERBS". Where else could they get them?
I'm no chemist but I'm sure they change the compositions around to make other compounds & poisons. Like chemotherapy drugs that I've heard most chemotherapists say they would take themselves.
I'm battling a really bad case of gout right now myself and the pain was so bad I couldn't take the time to find out if cherries or celery seed work, so I got a prescription from my doctor, but I'm also taking the celery seed as well. And am going to continue after this misery stops so hopefully I'll never get it again. So, try it and see.
I had family members that have gout really bad. I fine out about Standard Process celery seed extract. And my dad and brother try it and it worked. then I had a hurting in my little finger joint and down in my hand. I took 1 teaspoon and by night I was better. I would tell everyone about it. I"m going to try my husband on it for blood pressure.
I just started to take celery seed for two days and my foot pain is gone! Thanks for the great information. It was the first good night's sleep I've had in weeks!
I have been reading about natural gout remedies for two or three years now. My boyfriend has gout, and I was trying to help him avoid this painful condition. He hates taking the pills and their inherent side effects, and a lot of the remedies were either expensive (cherries) or involved taking more pills. I decided to try the celery seed. He is a difficult man, especially when he is "gouty", so any remedy has to be non-invasive to his 'manhood'-like carrying around cherries, etc. to eat-so I gave him half a teaspoon of seeds and told him to munch. He is just starting to show signs of another attack, with some pain and swelling. This is Saturday...I will post tomorrow with an update. Wish us luck!
gout IS arthritis!
People's Pharmacy response: Gout is indeed one form of arthritis. There are many.
