The DASH diet was developed to help lower blood pressure naturally. Research shows that it is good for the heart; now a study from Cache County, Utah, suggests that older folks who eat a DASH-style diet with lots of vegetables stay sharp longer.

Many people have unused medications in the house. If they are flushed down the drain, they contaminate the water supply. If they are put in the trash, they might endanger animals that could get to them. What is the best way to dispose of unwanted prescriptions?

We take your questions about prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, dietary supplements and home remedies.

Guests:
Heidi Wengreen, PhD, Assistant Professor of Nutrition at Utah State University

David Tusa, Executive Vice President of Sharps Compliance

How may I get a copy of the DASH diet? I'm 64 and have HBP for the first time - I hate taking MEDS.

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: THERE IS FREE INFORMATION AVAILABLE ONLINE (http://dashdiet.org/default.asp) AS WELL AS A BOOK THAT CAN BE PURCHASED.

On today's show there was a discussion with a college professor with xerostomia (Dry Mouth). You suggested suger-free gum and sour balls. This is the kiss of death for the oral health.

We suggest using gum not with sorbitol but with Xylitol. This acts as birth control for bacteria, stimulates saliva and changes the pH of the plaque. Sour balls for radiation patients leads to radiation caries. The xylitol comes in many flavors that will stimulate saliva and comes in a gel and mint forms. Xylitol is even in some of the Starbucks after coffe mints. It needs to be one of the first three on the ingredient list to have enough to be theraputic.

What-all vegetables must one eat? What ones may be avoided without making it less effective? such as garlic, onions, cabbage, & other gas-producers. I hate to go around passing gas loudly & stinkily & feeling bloated & uncomfortable. Are starchy potatoes as effective as broccoli? What about fruits? Miriam

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: MM, YOU CAN SAFELY SKIP THE GARLIC, ONIONS, CABBAGE AND BROCCOLI, SO LONG AS YOU SUBSTITUTE OTHER NUTRIENT-DENSE VEGGIES LIKE SPINACH, BEETS, SWEET POTATOES (MUCH BETTER FOR YOU THAN WHITE POTATOES, SO LONG AS YOU DON'T LOAD THEM UP WITH BUTTER AND SUGAR), KALE, SWISS CHARD, WINTER SQUASH, GREEN BEANS, SUMMER SQUASH, ETC. THE CABBAGE FAMILY AND THE ONIONS CERTAINLY HAVE PLENTY OF VALUE, BUT IF THEY AFFECT YOU AS THEY AFFECT MOST PEOPLE, YOU CAN STILL GET YOUR DASH-DIET WORTH OF OTHER VEGETABLES AND STAY HEALTHY.

I have glaucoma and one of the callers made a few suggestions that had worked for her to lessen the pressure on her eyes. As I was driving in heavy traffic on I-95 I thought it best not to grab pencil and paper. However, I cannot remember everything that was mentioned and would love to know more. Thank you.

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: THE CALLER IS TAKING BILBERRY, RUTIN AND VITAMIN C. SORRY, HE DID NOT GIVE DOSES.

On your Sept. 12 show, you recommended beets to a caller who was following the DASH diet. You also mentioned the difficulty of finding beet juice. I was surprised that you did not mention borscht, a traditional beet-based soup of Eastern European cultures. Borscht is found on grocery shelves in any town with a sizable population of people of Jewish or Eastern European descent.

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: GOOD SUGGESTION! WE LOVE BORSCHT. READ THE LABEL CAREFULLY, THOUGH: SOME BORSCHT HAS TOO MUCH SODIUM FOR A HEALTHFUL DASH DIET.

What was the name and web address of the company that disposes of unused/unwanted medications?

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: SHARPS COMPLIANCE
http://www.sharpsinc.com/

Xylitol users: please be very careful about keeping Xylitol products away from your dogs! It can be deadly for them. Dog owners know how their pets will seek out sweets, and this is one they need to hide very carefully.

Beet juice can be purchased in 16 oz bottles. the brand is Biotta. We get it by the case from our healthfood Co-operative market, Deeproots, in Greensboro NC. We drink a 4 oz glass 3-4 times a week. I don't really like beets, but the juice is so delicious I love to drink it. Be aware that it colors your urine and stool red! Thank goodness someone warned me of this when I made the first purchase, or it would have alarmed me. I think it helps a little with hypertension as well as well being.

A simple remedy for extreme gas in the gastric system is to drink a cup of strong tea, Lipton, Red Rose, any brand will do. I told my friend who recently had stomach surgery and she said it worked great for her, too!

The nurses were really pleased to find such a simple way to ease their post-surgery patients' discomfort.

I told my opthamologist about your caller's three helpful ingredients for lowering his eye pressure; there seemed to be some interest aroused!

I love your show !!

Dr. Keith- are you in a dental related field, an oncologist or what specialty? I find that information very detailed and very helpful
