Menopause used to be spoken about in whispers, if at all. Women dreaded The Change, and many men did as well. Now, with many thousands of baby boomers going through menopause every week, women are changing their attitudes. Menopause doesn't have to be a time of suffering: it can be a time for creativity as well.

Guest: Christiane Northrup, MD, Ob/Gyn and author of Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom; The Wisdom of Menopause: Creating Physicial and Emotional Health During the Change; and The Secret Pleasures of Menopause. Her Web site is www.drnorthrup.com/

How do these bioidentical hormones affect someone with T2 diabetes? I used to be on a transdermal estrodial Rx and after I was forced to use a generic rather than the Climara I had been using for several years, I developed extreme hyperglycemia. I'm skinny. Weight was not a factor. And I eat healthily, so that wasn't an issue either.

Also, I have tried every herbal remedy you've mentioned on this show, for long periods of time, and still have sever night sweats and several hot flashes during the day. Nothing has helped.

So, what do diabetics have to be careful about with the bioidenticals?

This is the very best segment on menopause (and women's health in general) I have ever heard. It gives me hope and I will send it to ALL my girlfreinds!

I wanted to hear every word of this program; very very important!

I was especially interested in the guests comments regarding thyroid implications at menopause, and medication for hypothyroidism. No matter how hard I tried, though, I couldn't catch the name of the guest. Sometimes it helps if the name is spelled out once or twice during a program. I'd like to see her books. Thanks much for a great, informative program.

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE:

I missed which clinics Dr. Northrup recommended for hormone replacement therapy. Specifically the one in Minnesota. I would greatly appreciate the feedback! Thanks People's Pharmacy!

What a great, great show. Gave me hope and inspiration to start working on the things that are within my control--diet, exercise and supplements. I also didn't catch the name of the bark-derived supplement ?pignoginol? and wonder if anybody has the spelling for that.

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE:

Pycnogenol

I listened to every word. Especially her views on hormone replacement for thyroid.
Will look into buying her books about foods and herbal treatments.
My husband and I listened to it together.

I just heard the last few minutes of this program - can I get it on a free podcast?

Thanks

Dr. Northrop mentioned one Thai remedy that I'm not familiar with. What was it? Is there anyone out there that has had success with it?

Also, there was no mention of the muscle/joint aches that come with menopause. Maybe that's not a problem for most?

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: THE HERB SHE MENTIONED, PUERARIA MIRIFICA, IS ALSO KNOWN AS KUDZU.

I need help! ! !
I am having hot flashes so bad! ! ! !
I had to leave during Mass today. I could not stop sweating. It is getting worse then ever.

Briefly: I have a Heart Condition called Cardiomyopathy. I have an implanted defibrillator.

I quit my estrogen in January 09. Just wasn't helping me with the Flashes. Plus, my Mother died of Breast Cancer and I figured why take that extra risk if it isn't doing anything for me.

Is there anything out there that I can take with my heart condition?

Thank you for your time,
Marcella G.

I am with Marcella G., however I do not have a heart condition. I am in menopause at the age of 50 & I have sweated so much in my entire life. This is not just hot flashes (I wish), this is an all day sweating from head to toe, dripping sweat down my sides, in between my breasts, my entire face, especially the back of my neck. I have tried the Rx Estrogens & none of those methods have helped. My Doctor now wants to send me on to Bioidentical Hormone Specialist which I am happy to see if my INSURANCE covers it. Any suggestions on something other than a Prescription? HELP!!

For Laurie.. I don't know if it will help but you should check out some black cohosh. I was having horrible sweating, and I too have always been kinda sweaty (which is partly why I don't exercise, in public, or do many outdoor activities in the summer) and the cohosh has really made a difference. I could not sleep or stand myself day or night until I took it. I hope it works for you as well as me. And I have experienced absolutely NO side effects. I see your post is a year+ old so I hope you check. Its good stuff, at least for me.
