Q. A while ago I read about persimmon tea for acid reflux. I suffer from time to time, but my husband suffers constantly. It is so bad that he wakes up almost every night and throws up! Prilosec, Nexium and a host of other drugs along with extra strength Gaviscon or Pepcid do nothing.

I made the persimmon tea. He drank a shot glass full the first morning and a shot glass after supper. From day one, he has slept soundly, and so have I. Nothing he eats now has caused him heartburn since we made it. The recipe was simple, though we did have trouble finding persimmons at first.

We just found out our insurance will no longer cover any of his expensive acid-suppressing drugs, so we are extra grateful!

A. We first heard about persimmon punch, a concentrated cinnamon-ginger drink, early in 2005. A woman wrote that she had tried it in a Korean restaurant and found that it stopped her heartburn. She made some at home and added 3 tablespoons to her tea morning and evening. After several months, her cholesterol and blood sugar were also lower.

We looked for a recipe for persimmon punch and found one posted by Hyungshin Song on the Food Network Web site: Combine 2 quarts of water, ½ cup of thinly sliced fresh ginger and 3 cinnamon sticks. Simmer for ½ hour. Strain the liquid and stir in 1 and ½ cup sugar and 1 cup of sliced dried persimmons. Keep refrigerated.

With reference to persimmon tea for acid reflux, I have contacted every nutritional/herbal store in our area & no one carries persimmon tea or dried persimmons or knows where I could purchase them. Do you have any suggestions?

I've never seen persimmon tea or dried persimmon but my neighborhood in Queens, NY sells fresh ones.

I, too, have been trying to find persimmons in North Carolina with no luck. My husband and neighbor both suffer from acid reflux/GERD. Help.

When I began using Prevacid for heartburn, the cost was reasonable and covered. The last Rx of 30 tabs was $379 (which dumped me in the donut hole) and with my doc's blessing switched, alternatively, with prilosec. It was doing so well, switched to just prilosec and now just 3-4 days/week, 30 min before dinner.

BUT ... while trying to stretch out the prevacid, I realized I'm a big nighttime snacker ... wondered if I eliminated the fatty and sweet things, it would make a difference ... did it ever. Hardly ever wake up with reflux and have lost 20#. Hummm ... maybe there's some wisdom there.

The Republic of tea brand tea makes a white tea with persimmon in it. It's delicious but may not contain enough persimmon to help.

If anyone finds a source for dried
persimmons, I would like to be notified. It sounds like it just may work.

Could not find at health food stores or Trader Joe's. But I just purchase some Premium Persimmon Herbal Tea at www.naturalpermissiontea.com (15 tea bags PLUS 3 free ones for less than $6.00 INCLUDING shipping). I wish you luck!

I would like to know where I can purchase persimmon punch. I could not find it on the food network

I also tried all the local health/natural food stores to no avail for the persimmons. I finally found them in a local Asian food store in my town. Apparently, everyone else figured this out too-they are having trouble keeping them stocked now!

Placer County, California is famous for its dried Persimmons. Japanese farmers began producing hoshigaki in the early 1900's. Dried persimmons are called hoshigaki and are produced in-season by several growers in the area. Persimmon season begins in October and is over by the end of November.

I just did a search for "dried persimmons" and several sites came up. www.nutsonline.com has organic dried persimmons (and almost any other fruit anyone could want). I think I'll try this persimmon tea because I have a real problem with acid reflux, but have no health insurance now; so no medication for it.

JustTomatoes.com has dried persimmons and many other fruits and veggies. They ship all over the US and have a Store Finder feature on their website to look up local stores that carry their products. Looks like they list two stores in Buffallo, NY.

Try taking over the counter acidopholis for upset stomach gerd etc. It is easy to find in vitamin sections of food and drug stores and not expensive.

I believe Yogi Teas has a Stomach-Ease tea which uses fennel seed and other ingredients. Ginger itself is great for tummy troubles -- I drink a little bit (6 oz.) of Reed's ginger beer (which also has pineapple juice) every night for digestive health -- it really does the trick! Chamomile tea is another good alternative -- Celestial Seasonings just came out with some more Sleepytime varieties which include that. Peppermint tea is also good if you don't mind the cool rush and it's definitely stimulative, and don't use if you have a hiatal hernia. I'll have to check Amazon for the persimmon tea. Hope this helps!

Are you sure about the recipe? I mixed up a batch of punch from some persimmons I had dried last fall. That was 3 days ago. The persimmons are getting awfully mushy in the punch and little pieces are beginning to float around in the punch. Should they be strained out? Only using 6 tablespoons a day, this punch will be hard cider before I finish!!!

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: IT SEEMS THAT IT WOULD BE ADVISABLE TO REFRIGERATE THIS CONCOCTION.

We found dried persimmons at "New Seasons" grocery in their Bulk dried fruit section.

I checked out a recipe for persimmon tea and it stated to strain out the persimmons after steeping for 2 hours. Then to refrigerate it.

How much tea do you drink each day?

What time of day should you drink the Persimmon Punch for acid reflux and do you eat the persimmons in the punch?

In the triangle area (Raleigh / Durham / Chapel Hill) of North Carolina, you can find dried persimmons at Grand Asia Market (1253 Buck Jones Road, Raleigh, NC 27606, 919-468-2988) in the frozen food section. Take I-440 exit 101B or I-40 exit 293A to Buck Jones Road. Grand Asia Market is located at the back of South Hills Mall, facing the highway.

Since this article was published in our local paper, the News and Observer, we have had tons of customers looking all over town for persimmons, eventually finding their way to us. If you have persimmons, you may want to leave a comment for your local market, too, to help people find this very special and beneficial fruit!

In the Raleigh/Durham area of North Carolina, I found dried persimmons in the frozen food section of Grand Asia Market, in Cary.

Whole Foods has dried persimmons. The brand is "Just Persimmons." They have other dried fruits and vegetables also under the same "Just ___" name.

To all the recent posts form NC- is the persimmon tea working to reduce your reflux? I am allergic to oranges and kumquats- would this be a problem with persimmons?

Thanks for anyone's help!

RE: NUTSONLINE.

I ordered dried persimmons, Turkish apricots and domestic dried apricots on Wednesday and they were delivered on Friday. Lovely people to deal with - very knowledgeable. The fruit is simply delicious. I have been snacking on the persimmons until I can get some fresh ginger. The Peoples Pharmacy seems to have the best recipe. Yippee ! ! ! ! no more Prevacid.

The mixture works well, I have been awakened nights and suffered sometimes daily for several years. A couple ounces of this tea and it settles right down. No cure but I suspect in time, maybe. Stress is always a factor I believe and that must be dealt with also.

In the Portland Or. area, Whole Foods carries it dried in bulk foods. Strain out solids after simmering. Cut above recipe in half or more and store in refrigerator no more than a week. Works great! Bye-Bye Big Pharm!

I live in Cabarrus County, North Carolina and have a few trees with wild persimmons that are significantly smaller than the medium tomato-sized ones available in stores in the Fall. Could these be used instead of the dried persimmons brought from the west coast? My understanding is that the larger ones are hybrids of the wild persimmons.

I would appreciate your thoughts on this.

Thanks.

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: PLEASE TRY IT AND REPORT BACK.

I would like to try this persimmon treatment. I just wonder if there is a variation that doesn't include a bunch of sugar that would work? Also, what about fresh persimmons (they are on sale at Publix right now).

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: YOU CAN CUT THE SUGAR, AND USE FRESH PERSIMMONS.

I'm using "Just Persimmons" dried from Whole Foods. I did not like the idea of using sugar and excluded it from my recipe.

Informed three friends, who also have GERD, and they chose not to use sugar, as well. We're fine with it and grateful for Persimmon Tea.

I get organic dried persimmons at shopOrganic.com, they seem to have the best prices and service - at least that I've found. They also have a wide selection of other dried fruits. I haven't tried the tea myself but a friend said she had and it seemed to be helping.

For Acid Reflux, try 2-4 TB of Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar (with The 'Mother') mixed with 1 tsp baking soda, then add 8 oz water. Drink this every morning and night. It's a tried and true potion.
