One antiviral medicine called Tamiflu seems to be helpful for preventing complications in children with chronic health problems such as asthma, other lung conditions, cancer or diabetes. A study of over 5,000 children found that those who received Tamiflu shortly after developing influenza were 25 percent less likely to develop breathing-related complications compared to kids who got no antiviral flu medicine. They were also about thirty percent less likely to get ear infections or be hospitalized. [Pediatrics, July, 2009]

Here we go again. Parents are going to panic and demand Tamiflu for every little problem their children develop. We all know that this is eventually going to lead to viruses that are resistant to Tamiflu. Please listen to the recommendation of your physicians. If Tamiflu is recommended by your physician then by all means use it, but we all have to use caution and restraint using these powerful anti-viral compounds.
Tamiflu should be used where indicated, such as people with immune compromised systems, but we mustn't panic. At this point the H1N1 (swine flu) virus has infected and killed far less people in the US than the normal seasonal flu. There are a number of other older drugs on the market to help get you through a bout of influenza and a vaccine for the Swine Flu is close to being ready. Stay calm.
