Omega 3 fatty acids like those found in fish or walnuts are critical to brain function. Scientists had hoped that omega 3 fats would be able to reverse or at least delay the progression of Alzheimer's disease. But an 18-month study funded by the NIH showed no difference between omega 3 fats and placebo in mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease.

In a different study, however, older people with slight memory problems got measurable benefit from taking DHA, an omega 3 fat. Memory tests conducted by computer showed that septuagenarians taking DHA improved nearly twice as much as those on placebo. According to the Alzheimer's Association, the study results should be confirmed by further trials before older people can be advised to take DHA supplements.

There is more to science than just making hypotheses. When this one was tested, it proved untrue.

There may be benefits proven for Omega-3 fatty acids. These are made by single cell algae at the bottom of the food web. Fish don't have the biochemistry to make them; they get them from their diet.
Eating fish low on the food chain gives the most omega-3 fatty acid. Fish high on the food chain, and long lived fish, have little omega-3 fatty acid and have high levels of organic mercury.

If you search the web, there are sources for shallow-depth-catch, YOUNG, LOW-WEIGHT (25/35lbs) albacore. Two sources I am aware of (won't shill for them, BUT buy their stuff routinely), out of Seattle & have 3rd-party testing of catches. Due to weight & age, possibility for mercury/contaminants (in general) minimized. Quality of albacore (and salmon) great, BUT is relatively expensive ($6.50 for 6 oz). RECOMMENDED!
