Q. I get terrible rebound headaches from anti-inflammatory drugs (both prescription and OTC). My doctors seem to not believe me; instead, they insist that anti-inflammatories are just what I need for arthritis. Have you heard of this and do you know of any anti-inflammatories that don't cause headaches when you stop taking them?A. Joel Saper, MD, is director of The Michigan Headache and Neurological Institute and past president of the American Association for the Study of Headache. He has long been concerned about rebound headaches resulting from overuse of pain relievers, including anti-inflammatory drugs such as Advil, Aleve or Motrin IB.
If such medications are used more frequently than once or twice a week, they can sensitize brain receptors excessively. Then, as the medicine wears off, the headache recurs. If you have worsening headaches with more frequent drug use, you should suspect this type of vicious circle.
You might consider topical medicine such as Voltaren Gel or non-drug approaches for your arthritis pain such as boswellia, fish oil, ginger or turmeric. We are sending you our Guide to Alternatives for Arthritis with information about home remedies and supplements that you may find helpful.

Thank you for your N&R (Greensboro) Sunday July 5, 2009 message. Don't ignore headaches from drugs is real. I had learned that Ibuprofen elevates blood pressure so I cold turkey stopped. Before, I needed to take two 200 mg a day just stop head pain. When I stopped Ibuprofen, not only did my recurrent headaches stop but my blood pressure went down also. I never took tylenol for over 35 years due to knowledge of the liver damage.
I now only take one enteric coated generic 325 mg aspirin about once a month for the once and a while head discomfort. This is real please spread the word some pain medications beget pain. I love aspirin and I don't give a hoot about Reyes Sydrome as I am not a child and I do not have bleeding ulcers or thought I had ever abused drugs till the headaches stopped. I am pushing the later end of 6 decades and generic coated aspirin works fine for me.
Could this be true with other pains as well? I took Naproxen daily for about 15 years and now take Celebrex. While my arthritis "hot spots" were relieved somewhat, I've had random pain all over my body, even where there are no joints. I also have a couple of other indicators of fibromyalgia and am now taking Lyrica for that. Is it possible that the anti-inflammatories have sensitized me to the extent that I'm now having fybromyalgia-like pain all over my body?
I tried Voltaren Gel a few months ago and it gave me loose stools.
