The World Health Organization has determined that the swine flu H1N1 has reached pandemic proportions. This is the first such designation for influenza in more than 40 years. WHO experts predict that this virus will continue to spread for months if not years. People at highest risk appear to be pregnant women, people under 50 and those with chronic health conditions such as diabetes or asthma. In countries where it is now winter, such as Australia and Chile, the H1N1 strain is starting to dominate over usual seasonal influenzas. That could bode ill for the next flu season in the U.S. Hopefully a vaccine will be developed before the pandemic really takes off.
