Researchers have been concerned that bisphenol A, a compound that has been widely used in hard plastics and the lining of aluminum cans, may interfere with the proper action of hormones in the body. This is called endocrine disruption and BPA has been linked to a range of negative effects. Hormone specialists at the Endocrine Society meeting heard that low doses of BPA can disrupt normal heart rhythms in female mice and rats. Other studies demonstrate that when pregnant mice are exposed to BPA, DNA changes in their offspring are lifelong. The Endocrine Society scientists declared that BPA is a significant concern to public health and called for more detailed research. The FDA is preparing to re-examine its previous conclusion that low levels of BPA are safe for children.
