Q. Please put the question of whether milk of magnesia works on acne to rest. I had developed such severe acne on my buttocks that my dermatologist said, “Well, no one sees your behind.”
A daily application of MoM after my morning shower, allowing it to dry somewhat before dressing, has cleared up the problem by 99 percent. I have started using the generic type and notice no difference in effectiveness.
A. We have heard from many people who have found milk of magnesia (MoM) helpful against facial blemishes. Like you, they applied it to clean skin and allowed it to dry.

I had read about this before, so when my 12 year old grandson started getting pimples, I went out and purchased a bottle of MOM for him, the ORIGINAL MOM. He started using it, and his skin cleared up almost immediately. He uses it now whenever he needs to, a layer on at night allowing it to dry. He says" Nana you are the best!"
I am intrigued by the MoM use for acne. Is there anything like this for roseacea? I am looking for something other than taking the anti-inflammatory pill Oracea and using the strong cream Finacea. I realize that acne and rosecea are different diseases but do you have any similar remedies for the latter? Thank you. Each time I have a breakout it seems to be worse than the time before and I have a hard time controlling it now.
I've had rosecea for over 10 years. It began on both cheeks and all over my nose. Now I just have reoccurrences on the lower part of the nose. The 3rd dermatologist I went to for relief gave me a prescription that finally worked for me. Sulfur. Sodium Sulfacetamide 10% & Sulfer Wash in a combination made by Glades. She also prescribed a sulfur suspension cream to put on after the wash, but after several years, I realized the cream, for me anyway, made it take longer to go away. I also apply tea tree powder after using the wash. This works for me. I wish I knew what makes it flare up. I think it has to do with fat in the diet. The dermatologist says that Mites are mostly responsible for rosecea.
When using the MOM do you leave it on your face overnight and then wash it off in the morning?
PEOPLE'S PHARMACY ANSWER:
Some folks let it dry and leave MoM on overnight and then wash it off in the morning. Why not give it a try and let us know how you make out.
I have had rosecea and have had some success by washing my face with regular dandruff shampoo once a day when I have flair ups. I also have a presc for metrocream. When the flair ups are bad I leave the shampoo (mixed with water) sit on my face for about 15 seconds. Seems to help me and two others I have told this too.
MoM is a magnesium hydroxide solution. The way it works as a laxative is that it draws water from tissue. So it is probably drying out the acne and not letting the acne bacteria feed on moisture. My husband had acne for many years until I bought a cleanser which contained Bentonite clay. This clay is also known to draw water (and impurities) to itself, like a mineral sponge.
Using the cleanser on his face not only got rid of the acne, it also cleared up dandruff, even though he did not apply it to his scalp. The cleanser is no longer available, so I will have him try this.
I'm 53 and have menapause-related acne/rosecea. MOM works well for the acne, but it is also very drying for my skin. All the other prescription and OTC treatments I've tried cause the same problem.
I've been using Neosporin lately and it seems to be a better solution. My concern is that the warnings on the package say not to use Neosporin for longer than one week. Once acne is established, I don't think it usually goes away in a week. I read one blog that said the risk is that your skin can become antibiotic-resistant. But the package also recommends using Neosporin 3 - 4 times/day, and I only use it once/day. So maybe I can use it for four weeks without worrying about it?
MOM is amazing. I have bad allergies that make me break out in hives which contributes to my acne ridden skin. I apply MOM evernight and rinse of in the morning. My skin is 90% better. I was in such despair and was taking both acne gel and about 3 anti-histamines a day. I have stopped taking both thanks to MOM!
