Q. I am 56 years old--well into menopause--and stopped taking prescription hormones about four months ago. While they helped somewhat with the hot flashes, they did little for the vaginal dryness and loss of libido. I felt they weren't worth the risks that are now associated with HRT.
The hot flashes are getting worse now, though, and I’d like some natural relief. I hate waking up in the wee hours drenched in sweat. I am not overweight and I exercise 2 to 4 days a week. I've read that black cohosh and other herbal "remedies" are not much help, except for soy. I am not fond of soy milk but wonder how else I can get more soy in my diet. Do you have any suggestions?
A. The research on soy to treat hot flashes is inconclusive, but fermented soy products such as miso and tempeh are readily available and worth a try.
You might also consider Pycnogenol, derived from French maritime pines, or a combination of St. John’s wort and black cohosh. There are studies supporting each of these approaches. I, too, experienced terrible hot flashes after stopping HRT. I started getting acupuncture and found immediate relief within one week. That was over 5 years ago and I am still hot-flash-free and doing acupuncture. There are also many other wonderful aspects of acupuncture as well.
I have been dealing with night sweats for months and can't seem to get any relief. I've had CT scans of my chest, neck and abdomen. (3 years ago I had a benign brain tumor removed) I was on the Vivelle HRT patch and my Dr. felt I had been on it too long, so I stopped using it. I take 60 grains of Armour Thyroid daily so don't think I can use soy products. I also take Fosamax once a week.
I sweat profusely day and night. I'm awake approximately every 2 hours. I'm 20#s overweight. I try to exercise daily and have been watching the amount I eat. No weight loss and I'm getting really discouraged. Will check with my Dr. and see if I can take any of the above OTC's with my prescription drugs. I'm to the point I'll try about anything.
I am 55 and suffering with the vaginal dryness and loss of libido which makes intercourse very painful. I am not bothered a lot with hot flashes, just once in a while. I have tried prescriptions and herbs with no relief. I am, newly, trying the bioidentical creams, but haven't been on them long enough to know if it is helping me...... Do we have to live like this the rest of our lives?????????
try making a tea with red clover. It is growing all over now in the spring & i try to find an area without pollution (woods near my house). It works very well.
A friend of mine had great success with licorice 'tea', one to three times per day. Buy a licorice extract (preferably in a dropper top bottle) and add 10 drops of the extract to hot water. My friend swore she 'never had another hot flash'.
