Q. I heard a guy on the radio talk about easing his chronic, relentless diarrhea with coconut. I have had a very bad time with diarrhea also, so I have tried eating some raw shredded coconut.
I can’t believe how well I feel. My stomach does not bother me at all now, and it is liberating not to have to worry about staying really close to a bathroom.
Even better, everything with respect to elimination is more predictable and I don’t have to embarrass myself by scrambling (very VERY fast walking) to the restroom. Imodium did not work, Lomotil did not work, but coconut works wonderfully. Yay!
A. We have heard from hundreds of readers who tell us that coconut can calm chronic diarrhea. We still have no clear explanation.

For the past 10 years, I've given half a coconut macaroon to my Greyhounds with diarrhea. Works every time - and the dogs love it.
Any guide on how much coconut (grated) to use for IBS symptoms to sprinkle on the cereal? Thanks
Hello- I also am trying to remember reading something on using shredded coconut in cereal..does the coconut need to be baked first or do you use it just raw????
Does coconut oil have a similar effect, or just the whole coconut?
As child, my grandmother used to give me coconuts milk for diarrhea or parasites. This was her way to cure her grandchildren in Nicaragua. The younger the coconut the better, there is not substitute for the natural way. Eventually, reading books about nutrition I also find out that where ever my old grandmother used to cure my ailments as a child, it was right. She was our medicine woman in the village.
We have to remember that, diarrhea is a way to "flush" bacteria and impurities from the stomach and colon. Using medicine to stop the healing process is contrary to our nature.
I turned 70 on 9/2/09 and came down w/the worst case of "D" of my life which lasted 8 days. I tried over the counter meds and home remedies to no avail. Then I read your web and
darted to the store and bought some coconut flakes. I took 2 dosis (about 8 tsps total). Within 24 hrs I was back to normal. COCONUT WORKED 4 ME!!! THANKS!!!
