Eating Arugula to Avoid Ulcers

Perhaps patients with a propensity for stomach ulcers would do well to eat more arugula. Research from Saudi Arabia suggests that the dark green leafy vegetable has anti-ulcer activity. Scientists exposed rats to stress as well as a variety of toxic substances that can cause stomach ulcers. They included alcohol and the anti-inflammatory drug indomethacin. Arugula extract protected rats from developing stress-induced ulcers. It also reduced the damage done by indomethacin and alcohol. Arugula is considered an aphrodisiac in some Arabian countries. It is not clear how much arugula salad a person would need to eat, but this distinctive salad green is undeniably part of a healthful diet.
