Q. I have taken simvastatin for many years and over the last year or so I have developed extreme intolerance to heat. My face gets flushed beet red, to the dismay of my companions who wonder if they should treat me for heat stroke. Can simvastatin cause this reaction? Or is something else going on?

P. S. The only other medication I take is Detrol.

A. We could find no link between the cholesterol-lowering drug simvasatin (Zocor) and heat intolerance. Detrol, on the other hand, could be the culprit behind your problem.

Detrol and other bladder medicines are considered anticholinergic drugs. Medications such as Detrol, Ditropan, Enablex and VESIcare can cause symptoms such as dry mouth and constipation. They also reduce the body’s ability to sweat. That makes people vulnerable to overheating because the evaporation of perspiration is a crucial means of cooling off.

Be very careful to avoid situations where you might become overheated. Heat stroke is a dangerous complication!

I recently stepped-up my exercise program to an hour a day on the elliptical. I get pretty hot and sweaty. I have never had an issue with this before, but in the past few months, I have developed a rash on my mid-section where I sweat quite a lot. My husband mentioned to me that it looks like "heat rash." I bring this up here because the only prescription medication I take is Simvastatin, and I have never encountered this kind of outbreak before. Could there be a link?

I too have extreme intolerance to heat and my face flushes red and burns when exposed to temperatures above 75, not even in the sun. I have had back pain for years with no relief, tingling/nerve pain in extremities, fibromyalgia, shoulder and wrist pain. I take Levothyroxine, but not statins. Is it related to the thyroid problem? I had Graves and was radiated making me hypo. Perhaps it is my immune system attacking my own body or ???

I too have developed sensitivity to heat. I get over heated really quick, with a red face also. This has been going on for several years. Could synthroid cause this?

I was discontinued taking Vytorin and given Simvastatin instead. I have been on thyroid medication for years. Even though I've had periodic bouts of sweats sometimes they stop until I started on the Simvastatin. I am on many medications. I developed peripheral neuropathy with no reason for it. I found out what I had from one of your programs when another lady called in and described exactly my symptoms. The guest doctor told her what she had. I was on Neurontin already which is what the guest doctor said she should be on. I wonder now if the Simvastatin is causing my intolerance to heat.

I have all the fans going in the house now and it is not all that warm outside. I have the most debilitating pain in my left shoulder, left hip, back, and wrist, all on the left side. I was once told by a neurologist that thyroid medication would cause bone and joint problems. If that's true, then he was right. If it weren't for your show, this newsletter, and the internet, I would get very little information. Thank you. You do a great service.
