Ever since news about the negative effects of hormone replacement therapy made headlines, women started cutting back on HRT. Within a relatively short period of time, epidemiologists noted a dramatic drop in breast cancer that seemed to be associated with the reduced use of hormones. Now scientists report there has also been a drop in heart attacks. The rate declined most steeply among women 50 to 59 years old. Although it may be too early to prove cause and effect, this seems logical since the Women’s Health Initiative showed that instead of protecting women’s hearts, HRT increased the risk of heart attacks. The epidemiology now seems to support the results of this well-controlled experiment.

I took Premarin/Provera at age 44 through age 59 because of severe hot flashes. I read a few books about the dangers of HRT and quit taking, went to bio-identical topical hormones for two years, still had a few hot flashes. I'm 66 years old now and still have a few hot flashes but do not take hormones. I have a family history of heart disease, I'm shocked I survived those 14 HRT years without having heart problems.
I was put on hormones as soon as I entered menopause. The dose at that time was 1 mg. After 2 months of severe bleeding and a doctor who told me to continue taking it, I stopped it myself. I had gained 10 pounds, had no waist and larger breasts not to mention not feeling like myself.
A new doctor put me on a low dose patch which I decided to stop after a year. It took two years to loose the weight, but my waist went back to normal along with my breasts sooner then that. Yes, I had some hot flashes but I learned they were somehow linked to anxiety and tried not to get overwhelmed. I believe I would have been better off had I never taken them at all.
