Fish, Nuts and Olive Oil for Better Vision

Eating fish may help protect vision as people age. Australian investigators have been studying nearly 2,500 people for many years. Dietary data collected in this Blue Mountains Eye Study show that just one serving of fish each week reduced the risk of developing early age-related macular degeneration by about 31 percent. Those who ate a couple of servings of nuts each week also reduced their risk of early age-related macular degeneration by 35 percent.

Another team of Australian scientists found that consuming trans-fats found in bakery goods, crackers and snack foods boosted the risk of age-related macular degeneration significantly, while olive oil appeared protective. Age related macular degeneration is a major cause of blindness among the elderly. It is beginning to sound as though a Mediterranean-style diet might benefit eyesight as well as heart health.
