Q. Some time ago a podiatrist wrote to complain about home remedies for nail fungus. My husband has toenail fungus and our podiatrist prescribed a 30-day supply of Lamisil pills. They cost hundreds of dollars. The medication has to be taken for three months, totaling over a thousand dollars for a full course. Even a generic would have been pricey.
There were no guarantees it would cure the fungus. My husband would also need liver function tests every month to make sure the drug was not causing damage. I don’t know who could spend that kind of money for a drug with serious side effects. I’d rather try an affordable home remedy. Any suggestions?
A. Nail fungus is not a life-threatening condition, so there should be no harm in trying inexpensive home remedies to see if they will help. Readers have reported success with Vicks VapoRub, Listerine and vinegar soaks, tea tree oil, hydrogen peroxide and cornmeal. We have collected their recommendations and many other affordable solutions for common problems in our book, Favorite Home Remedies, available online at www.peoplespharmacy.com.

Had toe nail fungus, tried Vicks Vaporub, used several months and also peroxide and all worked. Thanks so much for all your help.Use many of your suggestions posted and a lot of them work.
I had a toenail fungus for 30 years and began using a product that I bought at a nail salon called Fung-Off. The ingredients are Acetic Ester, Thymol, and Vitamin E Acetate. Over a two year period I have applied the product on a regular basis, but not everyday. The fungus is almost completely grown off. Fung-Off costs $10.00 for a 1/2 oz. bottle. It works.
I have been plagued for years with nail fungus and/or psoriasis. Vicks VapoRub on my nails and feet at night have all but cleared it up. I've also tried soaking my feet in Listerine and vinegar but the Vicks works on both the fungus & the psoriasis.
Try tee tree oil for nail fungus. Worked for a friend of mine, but I have no direct experience.
My husband 'shared' his toenail fungus with me, I guess from using the same shower. What really works for me is Listerine. Each night just pour some over the infected nails. You might spray the shower floor with it, too. It works and is cheaper than medications!
I too had toenail fungus and dry, cracking, painful heels. Tried the Vicks and various other OTC, then my MD said to try the Lamasil. BEST THING I EVER DID. It did take 3 months, but now I can wear flip flops, my heels don't crack and I'm not ashamed of my toenails. I know this area tends to be more for natural remedies, but sometimes, prescription medicine really works-it did for me.
I read your article about toenail fungus and using Vicks Vaporub to get rid of it. I have suffered from toenail fungus on my right big toe for over 15 years! I have taken Lamisil twice over these years and it did get rid of it, but it eventually came back again. I decided to put some Mentholatum on my toenail, since I already had some at home and I thought it would be similar to Vicks Vaporub. It's only been 4 weeks or so and my fungus is almost totally gone. It's a miracle! I only use it in the morning and at night. At first during the day I rubbed it on the skin under the toenail (as much as possible), and then I put a bandage over it to protect my shoes. But now I don't bother with a bandage, and I just rub a little bit on the nail/skin at the problem area. It's almost totally grown out in such a short period of time! I highly recommend your remedies. They are fantastic. Thank you so much for your website. (I also read you in the Long Beach Press Telegram - California.)
Over a period of 6 months I used the "Listerine & Vinegar" treatment with good results. As an ongoing conditioner I also hand rub my toes and nails with the suds after shampooing with "Head and Shoulders". Toe nails have remained fungus free.
