Q. I've been having problems with high blood pressure for quite a while, especially since I became a truck driver five years ago. I guess the connection is I sit and don't get enough exercise.
I went off my blood pressure medicine about two months ago and it's really been a challenge to keep my diastolic pressure in the 80s. I've exercised, lost weight and cut down on the beers I drink to a few each week. I still need a little help in keeping the blood pressure down.
You wrote about chocolate to help high blood pressure. Are there other natural remedies? Would meditation help?
A. Congratulations on losing weight! That plus exercise often helps lower blood pressure.
Surprisingly, there is evidence that a little dark chocolate can help with blood pressure control. Too much chocolate, of course, will make managing weight more difficult.
Magnesium supplements and beet juice are a couple of other unexpected natural remedies for hypertension. Meditation may also help, especially accompanied by slow deliberate breathing. If natural approaches don’t work, drugs are necessary. We are sending you our Guide to Blood Pressure Treatment for more information on natural approaches and the pros and cons of various anti-hypertensive medications.

Why did you go off your blood pressure medicine? I can understand your desire to not take prescription medicine. I don't like to, but I do. Why do I take it? I have a brother in-law who stopped taking his blood pressure medicine and had a stroke. My aunt died from bleeding in the brain after she stopped taking her blood pressure medicine. I'd rather take my chances with the medicine.
I have been bothered by hypertension since I was 18 (I am now 66). I have been on a beta blocker for 8 years, and have also done aerobic exercise for 7 years. I'm happy to share with readers that my BP is now under control (112/72). Also, I like my little pill. The fears I had about BP medication were groundless. You should start with a diuretic, then get a beta blocker.
I hate taking blood pressure medications! And all the natural stuff helps but doesn't keep my pressure down to a desirable reading. So to avoid a major stroke I take 15mg of lisinopril and I tolerate the occasional cough with it. It's the only one that works for me. I had a mild TIA last year and in no way would I stop taking the RX medication. I have a very good quality blood pressure cuff and I check my blood pressure frequently at home. I am a 72yrs old female.
I suggest exercise, NO BEEF, chicken & fish,
low fat, fruits and VEGETABLES, garlic, good quality flaxseed oil or fish oil, extra virgin olive oil, no sugar, or very, very little. NO SMOKING, and moderate drinking; one glass a day.
