Q. I started working as a substitute teacher three years ago. Ever since, I’ve been getting frequent colds that often turn into bronchitis. Then my doctor prescribes antibiotics.
I am now suffering with my second cold in a month. I wash my hands frequently, exercise daily, and take vitamins, minerals and herbs. Right now I’m taking goldenseal, Echinacea and zinc.
Do you have any suggestions for me to bolster my immune system? I’d also appreciate a suggestion for shaking the current cold. I’m getting exhausted.
A. You haven’t mentioned taking vitamin D, which might be a factor. People with low levels of vitamin D are more susceptible to colds and flu (Archives of Internal Medicine, Feb. 23, 2009).
We are sending you our brand-new Guide to Colds, Coughs and the Flu for more information on vitamins and herbs such as andrographis and astragalus that may help you fight off infection.

My primary care doctor decided to test all patients for vitamin D and I was severely deficient. I am taking 50,000 units once a week. I have not had any infections nor required antibiotics for 2 chronic problems ever since I began taking it 9 months ago. I also had no colds or sore throats this winter despite working with the public and dealing with a lot of people with colds and flu. I have to assume its the vitamin D.
After a major infectious disease I was told to use probiotics. I now religiously eat a carton of yogurt daily and am doing 100% better.
There are at least a couple of studies now that indicate that the regular performance of Tai Chi can boost one's immune system.
As always, if you wish to learn Tai Chi you should find a good teacher who teaches a "long" form - not a shortened one.
Also keep in mind that, like other Qigong, Tai Chi requires regular daily use to be effective.
I was getting frequent colds and sinus infections. While visiting an ER with my father an ER nurse, that I was having a casual conversation with, told me about the following procedure to eliminate colds.
Mix one half teaspoon of non iodized salt and one eighth teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a cup (8oz.) of distilled water. Warm solution slightly (about 30 seconds in my microwave). Use solution to fulsh each side of your nose spraying it in one side and allowing it to run out the other. This procedure has also been endorsed by my allergist. I do it almost daily and haven't had a cold or sinus infection since I started (over 4 years). I use the NeilMed kit, available at major pharmacies. Try it, it's inexpensive and has been effective for me.
