Advair Diskus is used for the long-term maintenance treatment of asthma. It is only for people whose ashtma symptoms are not well-controlled on other asthma medications, as one of its active ingredients (salmeterol) may increase the likelihood of asthma-related death.

In 2003 my doctor prescribed Advair discus for asthmatic bronchitis and I used it as directed for a month. It caused a problem swallowing as it loosens the air tubes for breathing but also affected the throat muscle that closes the windpipe while eating. For some days I could not eat normally and was afraid of choking.

The druggist said that could happen, but my doctor did not believe it and ordered $500 worth of throat Xrays. I believe salmeterol is dangerous.

I use Fluticasone Propionate (generic Flonase according to Wikipedia) for seasonal allergies and it works great. There is no mention of Salmeterol on the bottle, so I don't think it contains that substance. I wonder if there are any down sides to using this medication.
