Q. When I was young I had an ongoing dandruff problem. This was about 45 years ago.

My uncle was a barber, and he told me to use the old brown Listerine. I have used it ever since, every time I wash my hair, and have never had another problem with dandruff. It works.

A. Thanks for the tip. Many other readers agree that old-fashioned Listerine can help fight flakes and itching on the scalp. That may be because the alcohol and herbal oils in Listerine have anti-fungal properties. Since dandruff is caused by yeast (a type of fungus), it is not that surprising that this mouthwash might be beneficial.

Although the makers of Listerine used to advertise it for “infectious” dandruff, the FDA no longer permits this claim. Nevertheless, rinsing with Listerine (or a generic house brand equivalent) seems like a cost-effective tactic for discouraging dandruff.

Do you use the Listerine before or after washing your hair?
Is the brown Listerine really any different from the other colors of Listerine in the store?

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: THE AMBER LISTERINE WILL NOT TURN YOUR HAIR BLUE OR GREEN. IT IS USED BEFORE WASHING THE HAIR.

To control my dandruff, I shampoo with a tea tree shampoo then use aloe vera gel after I towel off. It works wonders, plus, there's no mouthwash smell, no rinsing, no scalp tingle, and works as well as any high-priced styling gel. I use Trader Joe's brand aloe, but any high percentage aloe gel will do. I even use aloe vera gel as a shave cream. All natural, multi-purpose, and works great--my kind of solution!

Alternating your Listerine with Nizoral (Ketoconazole) shampoo twice a week may even give you better control of dandruff. Nizoral 1% is available OTC and 2% by prescription. It is an antifungal. I feel Nizoral 1% works as well as th 2% rx version.

To be sure I'm clear: you use the Trader Joe's aloe vera as a scalp lubricant, which helps to keep dandruff away? I'm looking for an inexpensive dandruff solution. Thank you!

How much amber Listerine is used? How long do you massage it into the hair/scalp before washing with shampoo/conditioner? Do you rinse out the Listerine before washing, or do you massage it into the scalp, then wash normally? I read in today's (9/20/10) column about using Listerine for seborrheic dermatitis. I've had this condition since childhood, and I'd love to have the answers to these questions. I think it'd be much cheaper to buy a jumbo bottle of Listerine instead of buying the expensive shampoos like Neutrogena T-Gel! Thanks!
