Q. What can you tell me about testosterone to jump start diminished sex drive in women? I used to have a fantastic libido and enjoyed a great sex life with my husband. But ever since menopause I am rarely interested in sex and when we do make love I almost never have an orgasm.
A. The “APHRODITE” study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (Nov. 6, 2008) reported that a patch containing 300 micrograms of testosterone “resulted in a modest but meaningful improvement of sexual function.” During this year-long trial, women on the patch reported “increases in sexual desire, arousal, orgasm and pleasure…”
In the study a few women on testosterone were diagnosed with breast cancer. The researchers could not determine whether this hormone was responsible. Long-term side effects of testosterone have not been studied.
We are sending you our Guides to Female Sexuality and Treating Sexual Dysfunction with more details about testosterone and other approaches for men as well as women. The FDA has not approved topical testosterone to improve female libido, though some doctors are prescribing it “off-label.”

my doctor prescribed an estrogen/progesterone/testosterone compounded cream after i went through surgical menopause. its amazing! i have my libido back!
When I started going through menopause, my Doctor did a hormone level test and prescribed bioidentical Progesterone. I have taken it for 6 years. When I have attempted to stop taking it, I can tell a big difference in my body and my moods. I am going to a different Doctor now and she says this is my last year, because it is as much a cancer risk as any hormonal medication, such as estrogen. Help! I do not want to stop taking it.
I was briefly on testosterone cream after menopause and found it helped with arousal time. I did not continue due to having to undergo blood tests while using it. Now I find that anticipating the physical closeness (kissing, skin to skin contact) helps to get me in the mood. Keeping an active fantasy life easily produces wonderful orgasms.
I am 10 years past menopause. My doctor prescribed a small, daily dose of a topical testosterone gel. I see a big difference of when I use it and when I don't.
Have been using compounded Testosterone for about a year with excellent results. If there is a risk, am willing to take it! Am 71, around 30 years past surgical menopause.
Try a good vibrator. There are plenty out there that don't look like anything more than a massager. I was a bit embarrassed at first, but my husband has been very supportive. Once you get passed any embarrassment, you can have an orgasm easily. Also, it's difficult to become aroused when you aren't lubricated because it's uncomfortable. We are very fortunate to have a store for women that is owned and operated by a couple of RNs (anyone 18 and over is welcome). Through them, we found some wonderful lubricants, but there are probably some websites that have the same things.
Another thing that has helped me is Kegel exercises. I actually bought something that I use to help me monitor how well I'm doing my Kegels and it has helped tremendously with bladder control. In the past, when a doctor would recommend Kegels I just couldn't get myself to remember to do them. This device actually has a little monitor that prompts you through the exercises and shows you how well you are doing at developing those muscles. I'm 57 and also use a very small dose of estrogen cream (3 times a week) but I think I'm getting more help from the lubricant and exercises.
