David Servan-Schreiber was a young doctor and neuroscientist when he was diagnosed with brain cancer. After it recurred and he had gone through the standard treatment, he combed the medical literature to find ways to strengthen his defenses against its return. The evidence-based approaches he uncovered can benefit all of us as we attempt to reduce our risk of developing cancer.

Guest: David Servan-Schreiber, MD, PhD, is a neuroscientist and clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He co-founded the Center for Integrative Medicine there. He is also a founding member of Doctors Without Borders.
The Australian Web site he mentioned on the glycemic index of foods is glycemicindex.com. His new book is Anti-Cancer: A New Way of Life.

Excellent program this morning #708!!!

I have been trying to eat as Dr. Servan-Schreiber talks about. I have Candida-(overgrowth of yeast), which has caused me to have Fibromyalgia. I have been eating lots of garlic, onions (have not tried the leeks yet), greens-broccoli etc... I have just about cut out all of the sugar. We buy NOTHING that has sugar in it, and believe me when you start shopping for sugar-free foods, be ware...sugar is in EVERYTHING!!! No wonder we are such a sick country. I am a junk food junkie, which is exactly why I am in the shape I am in now, because of the wrong food choices I made in my past. I am paying the price with my health today. BUT, it is never too late to start choosing the correct foods. It is a bit difficult when you first start changing your bad food habits, but it is well worth it. I've already lost weight, just by eating better! I can't wait until the pain goes away! My faith will also be a part of my healing.

I say BRAVO to the Doctor!! Just looking at his picture above I see a healthy man.

Why are not more Doctors teaching like Dr. Servan-Schreiber? We need more Doctors like him to be bold and tell the truth!

This was definitely an informative and vital source of information for patients. My brother who is a biochemist, was diagnosed with type B lymphoma. He is wary of "alternative" medicine but hopefully, given that Dr.Servan-Schreiber not only has the medical background to substantiate his findings, his complimentary approach to his own personal experience to address cancer will hopefully convince my brother of the importance of diet-especially the reduction of sugar to assist in developing a template for increasing his chances of maintaining a cancer free system. Thank you.

I am an eight-year survivor of ovarian cancer. I work with a nutritionist, Dr. Jeanne Wallace. Her dietary recommendations are remarkably similar to Dr. Servan-Schreiber's. My book, "Winter Body, Summer Soul," details my battle with this devastating illness. I have had amazing medical care at MD Anderson and in Springfield,MO. However, I don't think I would still be here without the diet that I follow. My doctors report that this cancer typically recurs all over but mine recurs in one or two spots. I also exercise regularly and am a devotee of yoga. This is a battle in which the patient must fully engage herself--spiritually, physically, and emotionally.

Could you get the good doctor's recipe for lentil salad and post it to the web?

As I was listening to the program, I remembered my recovery from depression after a serious bout of food poisoning from a trip to India. I was on every imaginable medication, and decided that while they gave some relief, no cure! As a chemist, I knew that the body is its own best doctor, and started drinking 1/2 gallon of unpasteurized milk from a local Amish farmer a day and eating "country" food, vegetables and chicken stocks made with bones and limes, also I made my own yogart and kefir to reinoculate my intestines with the proper living organisms...after 3 months, I gained weight, and lost the weight of "dread" that I felt. I also walked 9 holes of golf three days a week....and walked many miles with my daughters.
I cannot remember who said it but food is our best medicine and our worst poison...depending on type and amounts!
