Q. My endocrinologist said my vitamin D level is too low and told me to take 2,000 IU daily. I have done that and find that my arthritis pain has disappeared. Is there a connection?

A. It’s possible. There is growing awareness that vitamin D deficiency can contribute to joint and muscle pain.

I thought it was related to my having post polio syndrome, which causes a lot of muscle and joint pain, but when I get lots of sunshine, or take at least 2000mg of D per day in winter, I have a lot less pain. This means better sleep and better attitude. What a deal. And NO side effects!

My doctor checked my vitamin d level and found it to be low. She checked it because of terrible pain in my fingers and toes. Since taking the supplement she has given me it has disappeared. I am so grateful to her as I have had this problem for many years. I live in the north and sun exposure is of course lessened during the winter.

I was also told my Vit. D level was too low. I was given 50mu a week for three months . Then told to take 1,000 mg a day. After doing this for 2 months I started having pains again. I was retested and told it was very low again so I was put back on 50 mu , one a week for three months.
I would like to know of a good name brand for the 1,000-2,000 mg vit. d to take.

My dr. wants me to take 50,000, yes, 50,000units of Vitamin D3 because he thinks it is too low. It is 32 and I guess the norm is 35 to 100. I took one of them and I don't like how I feel. I will not take any more.

Husband and I started taking more Vit D,- him 400mg in addition to a multiple- me 400 to 800 a day - after reading more could be beneficial. He is diabetic 2 and I tend towards low blood sugar. Was surprised as his glucose readings were lower and would have to monitor often as would get below normal easily, could eat more normal, even cookies, etc., also he was losing weight. I was getting so spacey from low glucose and feeling weird and having to eat often. After we stopped taking Vit D, I feel normal again with only usual low glucose occasionally. His glucose came up again and had to stop eating the fun stuff, although we usually eat a healthy organic diet. Just wanted to let you know how it has affected us. Saw a blog on the internet where this had happened to someone else who was on insulin and they had to adjust their medicine. I was glad for the posting as it alerted me to what was happening with us. We are seniors if that should make a difference, but the person in the article was not.

What characteristics should one look for in Vit D3 to be sure of good brand, etc?
I have used Life Extesion in the past.
