Q. I read about a topical form of diclofenac called Voltaren Gel. It is supposed to be applied to the skin over painful joints like the knee. Is this an over the counter or a prescription product?
A. Americans are familiar with oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like celecoxib (Celebrex), diclofenac (Cataflam, Voltaren), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), indomethacin (Indocin), meloxicam (Mobic) and naproxen (Aleve, Anaprox, Naprosyn). Such medicines can relieve arthritis pain but the price can be increased blood pressure, ringing in the ears, blood clots, stomach upset and bleeding ulcers.
Applying the medication right on the painful joint may reduce the dose needed to get relief and reduce the likelihood of serious side effects. Voltaren Gel is new to the U.S. market and requires a prescription.

My mother, almost 100 and I have used Voltaren Gel for years. We buy it in Italy and find it extremely effective.
Sirs: I fell backward on to my left bottom February 28th 2011. Pain traveled to the right groin to the rt. quadriceps. Very painful could not lift my right leg without extreme pain. I am 91 years young but this fall has made it impossible to drive, resulting in my being grounded! Doctor prescribed Voltaren Gel applied twice daily. Results are remarkable. Virtually pain free now! Long term may require surgery to the hip joint.
Complete evaluation depends on MRI etc. I must say however that Voltaren has made my day tolerable for now at least!
From the very first treatment using Volteran gel, I had relief from unbearable pain in the groin to my right quadracepts due to a fall. After twice daily treatment virtually all pain has vanished! I am 91 years young and hope to be back on my feet and walking without the use of electric cart.
