Q. I heard that eating an Atkins diet could raise good HDL levels. Surely that is not true! Presumably all that saturated fat raises bad cholesterol even more.
A. In a recent study (New England Journal of Medicine, July 17, 2008), a low-carb Atkins-style diet resulted in higher good HDL cholesterol and lower triglycerides than a standard low-fat diet. Bad LDL cholesterol was not significantly different.

A few years ago, my family doctor told me something very interesting: He put one of his patients on a low carb/Atkins-type of diet to get her cholesterol down to normal.
He told me that meds just would not get her cholesterol down; nothing seemed to work UNTIL he put her on Atkins-type/low carb/high fats/proteins type of diet;he said that her readings went down...and quickly! He told me that he was quite impressed.
I was told that research shows that eating grass-fed beef actually raises HDL and eating free-range chicken eggs actually lowers LDL. Is there any truth to this? I have not been able to find any research to back up these claims.
