Q. I read in your column about persimmon punch helping ease acid reflux. I have terrible reflux and would love to know how to make this drink. Can you please tell me?
A. The original report on persimmon punch helping reflux came from a woman who sampled it in a Korean restaurant. She had tried unsuccessfully to stop taking her acid-suppressing drug, but the heartburn kept coming back: “Someone ordered Persimmon Punch, a concentrated cinnamon-ginger drink, for dessert. A few sips later, I felt fantastic. After a month of adding 3 tablespoons of the cinnamon-ginger drink to my tea morning and night, my heartburn was in control.”
We found the following recipe for persimmon punch on the Food Network Web site, courtesy of Hyungshin Song: Combine 2 quarts of water, ½ cup of thinly sliced fresh ginger and 3 cinnamon sticks. Simmer for ½ hour. Strain the liquid and stir in 1 and ½ cup sugar and 1 cup of sliced dried persimmons. Chill in the refrigerator overnight and serve cold.

I heard that vinegar works really well for acid reflux. So I tried it via pickle juice.(I don't like vinegar) I did about a shot glass a day for a week. It got rid of it. I start feeling like it is going to return and I do a shot of pickle juice. I almost never do it any longer. It has been at least 3 months or more since I have had any symptoms.
The reader has acid reflux because he or she is too acidic, not because of a lack of persimmon punch. Alkalize your body with alkaline food and drink alkaline/ionized water and get permanent relief from heartburn and acid reflux.
Dean W's comment above is grossly over generalized. People can have acid reflux for many medical reasons other than the simplistic view that their body's are too acidic;
hiatal hernia and lazy LES (lower esophageal sphincter)to name just a couple. In both of these cases, it is unlikely that eating more alkaline food will cure the symptoms.
My grandmother used baking soda--a "bicarb" and it worked great. Still use it today; about 1/2 tsp. in half-glass water. Breathe thru your nose if the taste bothers you. You'll belch in a moment or two as the alkaline sodium bicarb reacts with the acid and liberates CO2.
Digestive enzymes usually helps. I'd read that many people with acid stomachs really have too little acid so adding Betaine HCL really helps them.
I never had acid stomach but my iron was always low and couldn't donate blood. I've been taking Betaine HCL for over 20 years and not needed any iron pills. I have had to increase the amount considerably over the years though. I do take a pancreatic enzyme with each meal as well.
My 14 year old nephew came to live with us and he'd often had a stomach ache. I added digestives (HCL & pancreatic) to his vitamins with meals and it solved the problem. Solved his canker sore problem too.
I would love to make this persimmon punch. But where do you find dried persimmons?
Regarding the query of where to get dried persimmons, I found, in Portland, Oregon, that the Korean food market, and sometimes other general Asian markets, carry dried persimmons BUT only starting in Nov-Dec. In the meantime, I will try a persimmon Korean tea I found at Paldo World Asian Market in Beaverton, Oregon-(503) 641-3313.; in Nov-Dec., I will purchase 6-8 pieces per bag of dried persimmon at An Dong Asian Market in Portland, Oregon- (503) 777-2463.
Perhaps these could be ordered by calling these markets at these Oregon locations. I also googled Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and Asian markets in this area to call for exploration of these specific products. I learned more about the shopkeepers' knowledge of the persimmon products. Hope this helps. T.L. in Portland
I would like to know where I can fine dried persimmons?
Nobody addresses Hiatal Hernias. I have once again stopped my PROTONIX after 3 1/2 years. this time I will add a Pepcid as needed. I want off, but everyone addresses heartburn, what about Hiatal Hernias? I have been told I need a PPi forever. My doctors don't know my God, I know there is a way off these things!!!
My husband tried the persimmon punch with tea- every mornig and night and it worked great. He only did it for a little while though because he really doesn't like hot tea. Can you put it in something else or drink the 3 tablespoons without any tea? Or is it the hot tea that also helps?

We thought we'd give persimmons punch a try but to those of us who are weight conscious wonder whether all that sugar is necessary? The punch tastes just fine without the sugar so is it necessary for the medicinal effect?
PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: THE SUGAR WOULD NOT BE NEEDED FOR THE MEDICINAL EFFECT. MORE LIKELY IT IS FOR FLAVOR. IF YOU LIKE THE TASTE WITHOUT IT, ELIMINATE IT!
I can not locate the slice dried persimmon in the Titusville, Fl, area. Anyone know a supplier in this area, or any local supplier? Thank You.
I assume this would work with fresh persimmon too? One would probably use more volume of persimmon since it hasn't been dried.
We have plenty of Organic Dried Persimmons in stock for shipment anywhere.
Thanks, SunOrganic Farm
Can this be used in cold tea? 3 tablespoons to a glass of cold tea? With artificial sweetener? I am so tired of using Nexium and like the others the results are so hit and miss for so much expense.
My mom found that same article about the punch at the restaurant-almost sounds like an urban legend! At any rate I would be thrilled to have my reflux gone but I too have a small hiatal hernia and don't know if that'll fix it. Nexium is pricey but effective.
Did you get any info on whether fresh persimmons would work?
PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: ONE READER REPORTS THAT FRESH PERSIMMONS IN HER CINNAMON-GINGER TEA WORK WELL.
I've checked out many recipes for persimmon punch. None of them indicate whether the persimmons are left in the punch--assume that is the case tho--and whether the persimmons are supposed to be consumed with the punch to control heartburn. Does anyone know?
I found dried persimmons at New Seasons.
When drinking the 3tbs. of persimmon punch "morning and night", should it be
before breakfast and just before sleeping? Or just after breakfast and just
after dinner?
I also would like to know from the People's Pharmacy if the persimmon punch will work if you have a hiatal hernia, and do you take it before you eat in the morning and night or after?
PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: WE UNDERSTAND THAT IT MAY BE TAKEN AFTER EATING. WE DON'T KNOW IF IT WILL HELP IN THE CASE OF A HIATAL HERNIA.
Does anyone know how long persimmon punch will keep in the refrigerator?
I have a hiatal hernia and terrible problems with acid reflux. I take Nexium in the morning, Ranitidine before dinner and I use Sucralfate as an emergency if the acid reflux breaks through all that. I am down to Nexium only and I will stop taking that next week. I started using the persimmon tea/punch since Winco started selling persimmons in October.
I used fresh persimmons but I will find dried persimmons soon and keep them on hand. I mix the recommended amount of ingredients in the recipe using fresh persimmons and I leave the persimmons in the container. It takes me about 1 week to use all the tea. I drink about 3 or 4 ounces cold three times a day and before bedtime. I mix the morning tea with "Clear & Natural, Metamucil". One time I over ate at dinner and the hiatal hernia trouble kicked in and I threw up. This was purely due to the over eating binge!
I took a sample of the tea to my doctor and he really liked it. He said he is going to give the recipe to his mother and if it works as well for her as it does for me then he will start giving the recipe to his patients. One more thing, I can now eat what I want; chocolate, coffee, bananas.orange juice and coffee.
One morning I had a bacon & egg breakfast with buttered toast, orange juice and coffee. Not a hint of a problem! Yeah! Thank you for printing this information Peoples Pharmacy.
I was diagnosed with reflux eshophagitis and I am starting to use this persimmon punch. Hope to improve my acid reflux after some time. I will inform you guys.
Whole Foods markets carries strips of dried persimmon for $7.50 for 4oz. It tastes good just as dried fruit. I also found many sites by Googling "Dried Persimmon".
The Peoples Pharmacy guide on "Heartburn/Digestion" offers a lot of this info online or in print. That's how I am reading your comments now. I made the "tea" by just boiling persimmon strips without ginger and cinnamon, works also. I made it for a friend with a hiatal hernia caused by rheumatoid arthritis, and after 2 weeks on oral and infusion therapy of antibiotics, he threw up acid every time he ate because he had to stop Omeprazole/Prilosec because of Plavix interaction.
Scroll down and find Heartburn on the left side of the screen and click on it.
The dried persimmons are readily available at Asian markets (I found them pre-packaged in the produce section of a Korean market). The 1 1/2 C sugar in the recipe seemed rather excessive to me so I started with about 1/2 C or so and didn't add any more beyond that as it was quite sweet with just that much--you could probably get away with using less if you're worried about sugar.
I would definitely start with small amounts of sugar when you're making this! For anyone thinking of substituting, I used real sugar rather than Splenda just in case there's something in artificial sweeteners that might add to indigestion.
The flavor of the finished product is delicious and very refreshing!
You might want to google artificial sweeteners before using them.
