Q. I am 44 years old and have had acne since I was a teenager. Dermatologists have prescribed countless antibiotics, including Cleocin-T, to no avail. Birth control pills worked, but when I stopped the acne returned. I also took Retin-A, which helped but made my skin more sensitive to the sun and caused redness and cracking. I was excited to read about milk of magnesia as a topical treatment. My son (age 12) and I are using it and getting good results.

A. A letter in the Archives of Dermatology (Jan. 1975) suggested that topical application of milk of magnesia nightly could help reduce redness and inflammation associated with acne. Other readers have also shared their success with this remedy. We are sending you our new Guide to Skin Care with more details about milk of magnesia and other inexpensive home remedies for acne.

Cetaphil cleanser mixed with baking soda is a wonderful gentle scrub that helps remove dead skin cells. I do this regularly.

We used castor oil packs for my son's very nasty acne and it worked (over the abdomen/liver). It took six weeks using the packs for several hours 4-5 times a week. He got through his summer reading list and his face doesn't even have a scar.

I've read that eliminating wheat helps as well.

Persistent nightly and daily application of Adult Clearasil over a period of months can dry up even some well established acne to the point that the remaining problem material almost just "falls out." When consulted, my primary care physician recommended that I try Clearasil again but stay with it over a period of time before consulting a second dermatologist on the problem. Neither Listerine nor milk of magnesia worked for me, but persistent use of Adult Clearasil did the job.

I use baking soda mixed with water as a scrub. I used Cetaphil with the soda until I learned the Cetaphil company use animal testing in their products. I now use CeraVe cleanser. I used RetinA for 18 weeks and saw a big improvement in my skin although during that time my face was red, itchy and scaly. I now use it twice a week as maintenance. I can tell a difference in how my skin looks when I eat too much sugar which is known to be bad for skin.
