Q. You often write about toenail fungus, but I want to know how to get rid of fingernail fungus. I have it in both thumbnails.
A. There are many inexpensive home remedies that might help. None works for everyone, but readers have sent testimonials like this one:
“My doctor told me I had a bad case of toenail fungus. I got a bowl and a bottle of Listerine and soaked my toes in the Listerine every morning while doing my hair. (That took about 5 minutes.) My nails cleared up in 3 months.
“My husband also used it. He soaked his nails while watching TV. This has been a great cure and does not cost a lot.”
We discuss Listerine, vinegar, cornmeal, hydrogen peroxide and other home remedies for nail fungus in our brand-new Guide to Hair and Nail Care.
If home remedies don’t work, your doctor can prescribe medications such as Lamisil, Sporanox or Penlac.

I use tea tree oil. It's a natural antiseptic. I've known people who have been prescribed Lamisil and it didn't work.
I bought some large latex finger cots and used them on two toes with mouth wash and alcohol alternatively. I kept them on for two hours and have totally cured one toe. The other toe is very bad but appears to be improving. The nail is thinning out. I am thinking of using peroxide also. This is my method of being able to soak the toe for a long time. I protect the skin with a thin smear of petroleum jelly prior to putting the cots on.
My left big toenail turned dark an got too thick to cut with toenail clippers. I soaked the foot, while watching TV, in very warm water with about a one-half cup of cornmeal. (never measured) I noticed a difference after a couple of soakings and after six or so and several weeks, the toenail began to lighten up from the bottom. It has grown out thin again and the darkness is gone.
