Chocolate for hiccups does work. My father was recovering in the hospital for several weeks last summer, and many many times, he had lengthy bouts of severe hiccups. As he was recovering from abdominal surgery, these was extremely painful. His doctors tried anti-spasmodic drugs to end them, and the drugs did not help.
I read about this remedy in the book, bought him a bag of chocolate chips, and voila, it worked. And he is in his seventies and a sceptic. And when he mentions this cure to his doctors, they think he is making it up.
Anyway, he was thrilled.
I discovered this "remedy" one day after becoming so aggravated with having repeated bouts of hiccups, that I decided if I was going to have them, I was going to have them with chocolate. They stopped immediately, much to my surprise. The doctor had recently discovered a hair touching my eardrum - which according to his research was the source of my having hiccups several times each day - so I thought there was no end in site.
The chocolate remedy, however, has been fool-proof for years now. I don't know why it works, I just know that it does.
ALSO eating green olives helps.
Sure cure for hiccups: Fill a glass with water, bend over, and drink out of the opposite side for as long as you can. Repeat if necessary.
Mmmmmmm yummmmm. I think I may have to go test this one out... too bad I don't have the hiccups!
My daughter had severe hiccups while I was pregnant (everyday in the womb) and everyday (sometimes more) from the day she was born until she was in school (which then went to 3-4 times a week). Even now at 26 she still has them 1-2 times a week. These are not regular hiccups, instead they are a very deep very pain full type. The Dr's said it has something to do with the way her diaphragm (under her rips) was formed.
We tried every suggestion we could get our hands on (both medically and home remedy). One day a 90 year old woman I ran into at the store (my daughter was about 4 or 5 and crying from the painful hiccup) told me to try a teaspoon of pickle juice (of course it is a tablespoon now that she's older). We were desperate and went home and tried it (of course she still had them an hour later when we got home).
It stopped them immediately! To this day it still works (we have even asked for it at a restaurant if we are out, they think we are crazy but they always will bring a small bowl or glass of it). The dill or kosher dill seem to work the best for her, but my friends says sweet works on her son. The Dr said it's probably the vinegar and pickling spices in it, and has told other patients that have similar problems. I rarely get them, and never the deep painful ones, but the few times I have gotten normal hiccups it has worked for me too.
