Q. When I first developed hemorrhoids I could hardly believe this was happening to me. I called my doctor and she suggested surgery, but I didn't want to go under the knife. A favorite book about foods that heal suggested applying the inside of a banana peel to the affected area. It also recommended a pill, biorutin. I tried both approaches and within three days I had no sign of hemorrhoids. This may help someone else.

A. We were fascinated by your use of rutin, since this flavonoid is a constituent in many herbs, including chamomile, elderberry and hawthorn. Getting the banana peel to stay in position might be a challenge, but no more so than a cabbage leaf. We heard from another person: "When I was in Italy, my mother-in-law used cabbage as a hemorrhoid relief. I guess cabbage has been used for years for relief from soreness, pain and swelling."

I recently read your article in a paper regarding grape or pomegranate juice mixed with Certo can help arthritis. The article didn't say, however, how much Certo nor how much juice to mix together.

I am having quite a bit of trouble with arthritis. I'm taking Glucosomine, Chondroitin and MSM and fish oil and they have helped. I would also like to try the Certo and juice. I was also glad to be reminded of the sloe gin and raisins - my mother used that and liked it. I'll be glad for any advice/help you can give.

I was just at a routine prenatal visit and complained about a very painful external hemorrhoid. My NP suggested scraping the inside of a banana peel and mixing it with a little petroleum jelly to make it stick to the site. I tried it last night and got far more relief than the witch hazel pads I had been using.

My husband and his entire family have suffered from hemorrhoids. So when he started bleeding again he went online and found a cayenne pepper remedy. He mixed 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper in 8 oz of water and drank this twice daily for one week. He hasn't had an episode since. Cayenne is also good for stimulating digestion, etc. Cheap and effective!!!

After reading a column in my local newspaper by a Dr. Gott I decided to try taking the supplement Rutin. I have less pain and I do believe my hemorrhoids have shrunken. I understand that hemorrhoids are bulging veins so would Rutin help in other vein areas I wonder?

Hemorrhoids are indeed a vascular conditions. I personally take Ester-C for the condition. Suggested dosage, 500mg twice daily until relief, then cut back to once daily. Vit. C builds up the collagen around blood vessels and makes them stronger.

I developed a rather large hemorrhoid after the birth of my nearly 10lb son. It is still there, and and the doctor told me the only way to get rid of it is surgery. It doesn't hurt, but it has always bothered me just being there! Is there any hope of getting rid of "old" hemorrhoid? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Are there any home remedies for Melasma and age spots?

A doctor once advised me to use witch hazel, non alcoholic version. It reduces the burning, itching pain for me. If you use the witch hazel with alcohol in it, it will cause burning.

I used cabbage leaves at onset to reduce the pain and swelling from mastitis when I breastfeed my children. I heard it from other mothers. It fit perfectly. Slide a leaf inside your bra. Replace every few hours. If problem continues see your doctor. Mastitis can get very bad very quickly.

I found that the best relief for hemorrhoids is a warm sitz bath and zinc oxide. Zinc is a healer and has been used on babies for years.
Most remember the desitin in those days. It also has zinc but I do not like the smell.

Preparation H was a waste of money and did not help.
