Q. When I first developed hemorrhoids I could hardly believe this was happening to me. I called my doctor and she suggested surgery, but I didn’t want to go under the knife. A favorite book about foods that heal suggested applying the inside of a banana peel to the affected area. It also recommended a pill, biorutin. I tried both approaches and within three days I had no sign of hemorrhoids. This may help someone else.

A. We were fascinated by your use of rutin, since this flavonoid is a constituent in many herbs, including chamomile, elderberry and hawthorn. Getting the banana peel to stay in position might be a challenge, but no more so than a cabbage leaf. We heard from another person:

“When I was in Italy, my mother-in-law used cabbage as a hemorrhoid relief. I guess cabbage has been used for years for relief from soreness, pain and swelling.”

There is a separate topic regarding vicks vaporub and hemmies here. I tried using vicks vaporub 4 days ago for my hemmies and what a relief…I indeed felt a little tingling burn for the first 10 seconds because of the cut but after that, it was pure bliss… :) I was skeptical at first but it didn’t hurt that I try and I’m glad that I did!

I am also searching for relief. Trying Black Strap Molasses (a teaspoonful daily) and hoping it works. It has improved some. Don’t resort to surgery!

How long do these treatment take? I’ve used almost all of them with no result. This has only been over a period of 3 days. I was hoping for a small sign of improvement after first 2-3 times and when I didn’t see any I moved on to the next. I’m running out of hope, can someone suggest anything?

People’s Pharmacy response: Doctors sometimes suggest sitting in a warm bath a few times a day to ease the discomfort. And of course there are lots of home remedies listed on this site.

I used to have severe burning and itching after bowel movements due to having to wipe the area over and over. Even using wet wipes didn’t help the pain. I have a hemorrhoid, but it usually never bothered me except during and after BM’s.
I bought a bidet that attaches to the toilet, and got immediate relief from all that burning and itching. After BM’s I just turn that bidet on, I like the warm water, and it cleanses the area with no pain and leaves it feeling fine. I do not even pat dry because there is very little wetness and undies take care of that. What a relief after all these years! My bidet has a nozzle for ladies and it is great for hygiene. I wish I had this during my ‘period’ years, it would have been a godsend.

I read somewhere regarding how healthy coconut oil is for your skin, etc. Article also said it had anti-inflammatory properties. I’ve suffered with constipation for years. I developed hemorrhoids giving birth. These conditions have aggravated each other going on 30 years now. I now buy coconut oil in the grocery section.
If irritated and or swollen after bowel movement simply apply tiny amount over area. Instantly melts and almost immediately soothes. By next time I use rest room swelling and irritation are gone. I’ve even used it on itchy, dry skin. 56-60 years old and female of course. I will try the banana peel also. Not always home when I need my coconut oil. :)

First, I found the over-the-counter hemorrhoid creams to be ineffective when I was surprised by the appearance of internal and external hemorrhoids this winter. Lucky me, I got both types. I have found relief from and control of these bad boys through the use of witch hazel and banana peel cream. I know that Tucks Pads use witch hazel, but it seemed more economical to me to buy a bottle of witch hazel and some cotton balls. After my shower, I saturate a couple cotton balls, and use the natural pressure of my butt cheeks to hold it in place in contact with the hemorrhoids for a few minutes while I brush my teeth, choose my clothes, etc. Just a little sting at first and then relief. Then I use banana peel extract cream in the area and get dressed for the day. The banana cream is much easier and more convenient to use than actual banana peels which I tried to use initially. Just Google “banana peel extract cream” to find sellers. I got mine from http://www.fisalesllc.com/banana_cream. Then I repeat the same process before bed, and I have been thrilled with the results. The only time I have any problems is if I have multiple bowel movements during the day. But no more bleeding and no more daily discomfort. Nature provides relief once again where medications fall short.

After years of struggling with painful external hemorrhoids that used to take forever to go away, I now do the following treatment at home and it works for me:
    Fresh Bunch Bananas
    Witch Hazel
    Mini Food Processor
    Small Gauze Strips
    1) Cut the stem off of a bunch of bananas (The part where all bananas in the bunch are attached).
    2) Carefully cut the outside skin off, making a solid cube. The cube will be fiberous, a little damp and resemble sugarcane.
    3) Using a mini food processor, ‘pulse’ the pealed banana stem cube along with 1 Tablespoon of natural Witch Hazel (Store Brands are fine, just be sure they are alchohol-free). This will take a while due to the low volume of ingredients, but process until fine watery mixture develops.
    4) Pour the mixture into a small dish and dip a gauze strip into mixture.
    5) Apply directly onto the area of hemorrhoid. The gauze will be damp enough to stay in place once you stand up.
    6) Repeat again in 30 minutes with fresh dipped gauze strip.
    7) Using a clean, dry gauze pad, gently blot the area dry and make comfortable.
I often feel results right away as this is a powerful, natural astringent and pain reliever. I usually see results the next day and really see results the day after that. I also do not use any petroleum-based products. Your butt wants to be dry and un irritated.
If I do have an outbreak of a hemorrhoid, I do the above two times a day until the hemorrhoid is no longer visible and there is no pain associated. I also take an Bayer aspirin daily in the AM until the hemorrhoid is completely gone. This isn’t for everyone so ask your doctor before trying or doing anything.
Over the counter products don’t work. They are expensive and ineffective. I eat two bananas a day, avoid excess caffeine, and drink red wine.
I’m a strong man, relatively young, etc. I DO NOT LIFT HEAVY ITEMS WITHOUT THINKING OF WHAT MY PELVIC FLOOR IS DOING. Strengthen your pelvic floor and use your muscles to lift to avoid straining. I find that even lugging around a really heavy grocery bag, or moving heavy items without thinking about my pelvic floor, to be my worst enemy. Think about how you are lifting something or straining against something constantly.
    Peace.

I read the inside of a banana peel technique years ago on your site and have used it effectively ever since. It is kinda weird sitting on a little piece of banana skin, but for the relief it provides it is worth it!

For acid reflux or digestion problems; 8 OZ. Aloe Vera juice, juice of 2 limes, 1 T. ground ginger and honey to taste. Put in jar and shake well before drinking. A shot glass on an empty stomach works very well. Keep refrigerated and remember to shake before use. Better than Prilosec, Nexium, etc. Once or twice daily will do. Do not overtake as Aloe Vera can cause loose bowels.

Vick’s vapor rub is the best that I have ever used. I does not burn like you think it would, actually it has a cooling feeling. I have been using this for about 15 years.

Thanks for the post. I think natural hemorrhoids treatments are 100 times better than a hemorrhoids surgery, because natural remedies are cost effective and not pain full. Surgeries could lead to side effects, but natural treatments do not.

Thank you for this great post. The best treatment for hemorrhoids is home treatment. It is very embarrassing if you have hemorrhoids. One method you can use is sitz bath treatment. You can also put ice packs on the affected areas to help you shrink your hemorrhoids. Cheers and keep up the good work.

I found that the best relief for hemorrhoids is a warm sitz bath and zinc oxide. Zinc is a healer and has been used on babies for years.
Most remember the desitin in those days. It also has zinc but I do not like the smell.
Preparation H was a waste of money and did not help.

I used cabbage leaves at onset to reduce the pain and swelling from mastitis when I breastfeed my children. I heard it from other mothers. It fit perfectly. Slide a leaf inside your bra. Replace every few hours. If problem continues see your doctor. Mastitis can get very bad very quickly.

A doctor once advised me to use witch hazel, non alcoholic version. It reduces the burning, itching pain for me. If you use the witch hazel with alcohol in it, it will cause burning.

I developed a rather large hemorrhoid after the birth of my nearly 10lb son. It is still there, and and the doctor told me the only way to get rid of it is surgery. It doesn’t hurt, but it has always bothered me just being there! Is there any hope of getting rid of “old” hemorrhoid? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hemorrhoids are indeed a vascular conditions. I personally take Ester-C for the condition. Suggested dosage, 500mg twice daily until relief, then cut back to once daily. Vit. C builds up the collagen around blood vessels and makes them stronger.

After reading a column in my local newspaper by a Dr. Gott I decided to try taking the supplement Rutin. I have less pain and I do believe my hemorrhoids have shrunken. I understand that hemorrhoids are bulging veins so would Rutin help in other vein areas I wonder?

My husband and his entire family have suffered from hemorrhoids. So when he started bleeding again he went online and found a cayenne pepper remedy. He mixed 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper in 8 oz of water and drank this twice daily for one week. He hasn’t had an episode since. Cayenne is also good for stimulating digestion, etc. Cheap and effective!!!

I was just at a routine prenatal visit and complained about a very painful external hemorrhoid. My NP suggested scraping the inside of a banana peel and mixing it with a little petroleum jelly to make it stick to the site. I tried it last night and got far more relief than the witch hazel pads I had been using.

I recently read your article in a paper regarding grape or pomegranate juice mixed with Certo can help arthritis. The article didn’t say, however, how much Certo nor how much juice to mix together.
I am having quite a bit of trouble with arthritis. I’m taking Glucosomine, Chondroitin and MSM and fish oil and they have helped. I would also like to try the Certo and juice. I was also glad to be reminded of the sloe gin and raisins – my mother used that and liked it. I’ll be glad for any advice/help you can give.
