Q. You had a reader who wanted to know what to do for vaginal dryness. I’d like to respond.

From my experience, coconut oil is best. It is inexpensive and widely available at health food stores. It comes in a glass jar. Even though it is a bit solid in the jar, when it is allowed to warm to room temperature it easily dissolves into the skin. It is harmless to the tender tissues of the vagina and has antiviral and antibacterial properties that are very helpful.

A. Thanks for the recommendation. We have heard from several women who use olive oil for vaginal lubrication. As coconut oil is edible, it seems it too should be safe. Do keep in mind that oil of any sort is incompatible with latex and should not be used with diaphragms or condoms.

I have been using Emu Oil myself and absolutely love it.

I love pure Aloe Vera Gel which seems to stop any vaginal irritation before it goes into a UTI!!

I read about coconut oil as a lubricant in the Whole Earth Catalog. Needless to say that means I have been using it for years. My wife and I love it for general massage, more intimate massage, or simply dry skin. Apparently the melting point is around 80-85 degrees F, so it will be solid in the store, but melts nicely at body temperature. One brand had slight burnt smell that was not appealing, but most of the time the smell reminds me of days at the beach. Life is good.

i have been having a lot of problems with dryness as well and when using certain oils always end up with some kind of infection that requires medical treatment, we don't like the heavy oils or ky i will try what has been posted thank you so much for the information.

I am having the same problem since chemotherapy induced menopause. I had purchased a specialty oil to put on my skin during radiation treatments and decided to try the same on external vaginal area. So far, it has been more help than other oils, creams, and lubricants that I have tried. St. John's wort oil is actually an extract of Hypericum Perforatum (St. John's wort plant)infused in an oil. The only one I was able to find locally was Dr. Hauschka St. John's Wort Body Oil at Whole Foods. It is also available on the internet. It is expensive, but worth it. It has a healing effect, so I use it every day and save the lubricants for sexual activity.

I need help. I haven't been able to be intimate with my husband for 2 years. We are middle age and don't have sex often. I suffer from vaginal dryness and fill terrible pains when I do. I have tried creams, gels AND everything in between. The suggestion that coconut oil is good sounds promising. My problem is I am afraid to try and feel pain. what to do?

I have been using coconut oil for about a week. The feeling was so much better. I had no pain from vaginal dryness but I now have a yeast infection. Could it be related to the coconut oil?

I have vaginal dryness problems, but I also have a nerve pain, in my vaginal wall. I can take an anti-depressant, however, I prefer not too. One, it makes the desire for sex, even harder. I need help for the desire, dryness, and the nerve pain.
Any suggestions? Coconut oil is just for lubrication, right? It doesn't help with any of the above? Any other suggestions. This is making our marriage, go downhill and I don't want that. It's not fair to either of us.

Thanks,

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: COCONUT OIL OR OLIVE OIL HELP WITH LUBRICATION. THEY PROBABLY WON'T CHANGE THE NERVE PAIN, BUT CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN THE COMFORT OF RELATIONS.

Hello! (Especially for Ashley & DB) You might find success looking into physical therapists who specialize in women's health issues--(typically pain with intercourse & incontinence issues). A few years ago I was having MAJOR burning issues with anything sexual and even going to the bathroom and it turns out I had been clenching the vaginal/pelvic floor muscles for a few years and never knew it. All that clenching had tightened the muscles and made stretching them HURT!

After a few months working with a wonderful physical therapist who showed me how to manually massage the pelvic floor muscles and helped me realize that I was clenching 24-7, I am able to have pain-free sex. YEA! Search for someone near you if you're interested. Good luck! Keep searching! No one should have to live with this kind of pain.

I have used a few types of coconut oil (and other plant oils) as lube but found them pretty overpowering and sometimes gritty (like at the bottom of the jar coconut esp.). I did find a natural lubricant called Liquid Goddess a few months back, they use "raw coconut extract" which is what I bought at the store but for some reason the taste of the Liquid Goddess is much lighter and it is super slippery and clean. only downside is the price, (9bucks).

Sometimes the fear of pain can cause you to tense up and stress out and dry up or just be generally not in the right state of mind for intimacy. I would suggest a relaxing glass of wine or massage or some yoga to help you relax before you try - or the fear might be in the back of your mind, and THAT may ruin it.

I have a very bad yeast infection. I cannot use KY, it burns me. I'm looking to use coconut oil, but not sure if it will make my yeast worse. For the infection I've used monostat 3 tons of times, and tried difulcan 2 times, 150mg each time.

Does anyone share the same problem and found lube that doesn't burn them?

How do you apply the coconut oil to relieve vaginal dryness? Just externally? How do you get the oil inside the vaginal?

I'd either rub the oil on, or get some sort of mold and make it into a suppository.

@ lilyona - I haven't found coconut oil to burn, but if you have a yeast infection, you probably shouldn't do anything at all. Sometimes my infections take stronger stuff than diflucan or monistat. It usually takes some prescription strength stuff - terazole or something I think. That's what causes the burning, not the medicine..

There are a few personal lubricants made entirely of vegetable oils. They are more expensive than plain coconut oil, but having tried all of them I think the cost is worth it!! My favorite is Amore Personal Lubricant. It is a blend of oils and I think it is fantastic - it lasts long, has a great smell and just plain works better than all the others I've tried.

I have a yeast infection and I used coconut oil every time for like 3 weeks now.. it's non irritating and there's not much pain at all during intercourse after using it for a couple of weeks now. Coconut oil makes a unsuitable atmosphere for yeast to grow in and so it can't multiply. Also my vagina doesn't itch at all anymore but the discharge is still common. It's non greasy doesn't sting, and super slippery. It's just amazing. I recommend everyone use this. I also take a tablespoon of cinnamon every night with milk and it works like magic for killing medicine resistant yeast.

Hello... I am a big fan of coconut oil in every other realm of life... cooking, skin care, hair care... have yet to use it as a lubricant.

My question is, however, as my boyfriend and i use condoms... if, as stated at the top, oils are incompatible with latex - what should we do?

I find the over the counter lubricants cause irritation and infection... has anyone got any alternatives? And what does it mean that oils and latex are incompatible?
Thanks!

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: WHAT IT MEANS IS THAT COCONUT OIL (OR ANY OTHER OIL) WILL DISSOLVE THE LATEX. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE, BECAUSE THE CONDOM THEN WOULD NOT WORK.
THERE ARE NON-LATEX CONDOMS, INCLUDING FEMALE CONDOMS, THAT MIGHT OFFER AN ALTERNATIVE FOR THE TWO OF YOU.
THERE ARE OTHER LUBRICANTS AS WELL. SYLK CAN BE QUITE HELPFUL, AND SINCE IT IS WATER- RATHER THAN OIL-BASED, IT DOES NOT ENDANGER THE INTEGRITY OF A LATEX CONDOM.

Myself and my girlfriend have used pharmaceutical coconut oil as a sexual lubricant for five years. Chemists sell it cheaply, it is pure, high grade, tasteless, odourless and glides beautifully skin to skin so it is perfect for a lady who wants a safe, beneficial lubricant to use for herself or sexually with her lover. And yes, it does have fantastic anti bacterial properties that will discourage yeast infections and soothe, lubricate and enhance ladies and mens delicate skin areas.

Visit this site as it has excellent information on yeast infections of all types. Expeller Pressed Coconut Oil and Virgin Coconut Oil are probably your best bets if you must use them for the intended purposes above.

As for infections (bacterial/fungal) and antibiotics, eat plenty of yogurt (organic, or any of the popular Greek yogurts with minimal sugar). Also invest in a decent probiotic supplement. Do some research to see which is best (economic, and will survive stomach acid). Go with one that does not need refrigeration, for convenience.
The coconut oil that some people use may contain unknown fillers, which could be a culprit. Who knows.

Tasteless coconut oil is BAD for you and does NOT have any of its original beneficial properties... if it is tasteless, that means it is RBD (refined, bleached, deodorized) and in fact will contain HARMFUL components and chemicals. Use virgin coconut oil (organic is best) and then you'll be getting the benefits, plus it has a delicious taste.

My husband and I have used unrefined, organic coconut oil for years. I have used it as a vaginal moisturizer - I heat the oil just enough to make it liquid, and add emu oil and mix it up well. You can pour it into a mould to make suppositories and refrigerate it or just use it right from the jar. It's important to remember to buy unrefined, organic so there are no chemicals used in processing. A good brand is Garden of Life - it's expensive, but it lasts quite a long time and it's worth it for the quality.

I have read online that personal lubricants with glycerins (sugars) will cause yeast infections in those people who are susceptible. There are three recently approved organic/paraben-free/glycerin-free lubricants (Yes, Nude Personal Lubricant, and Slippery Organic). These have mixed reviews, some good and some not so great. I'm also shopping for a lubricant that doesn't burn as well, and although I am not sure about using any oil (because of the possibility that coating the skin on areas not easily washed with soap/water can increase the risk of infection, as with olive oil), I will be experimenting with coconut oil because I am freaked out by the scary ingredients in most lubes, even the more natural ones.

I like the idea of making a suppository with the coconut oil... Where can I purchase a mould to make the vaginal suppository? Does the emu oil make the coconut oil more solid, so better for making it into a suppository? Thanks.

I don't know anything about emu oil, but you shouldn't have to add anything to make the coconut oil hard. Just fill the mold with the oil & put it in the fridge. The oil will solidify at about 76F and your body heat will melt it later.

Oh my gosh, you people use emu oil? You do realize that's from a dead bird right?

Organic Coconut Oil makes an outstanding lubricant. Also, my wife has not had a yeast infection since we started using it. She would get them often, and I don't think sex was always the cause.
She has not had one at all. Try Spectrum Organics - it is available in almost any store. We cook with it a lot too it is good for you.

The Plain Organic has no scent. The Virgin Organic has a strong coconut scent (great for baking cake) but don't use it for sex. Some people might really like it though it smells nice.

Don't give it a second thought! Try it!

You should research the medicinal benefits of Coconut oil... It turns out that it is VERY beneficial for a yeast infection. But you should use the purest oil you can get. Also, if you are plagued with frequent yeast infections, you should look into changing your diet and educate yourself as to what is happening in your body to cause them... I have learned so much in the last few weeks... I am realizing that I have had Candida (yeast infection) for probably YEARS... and it just recently got bad enough to cause lesions on my body.

Prescription creams and meds only treat the effects, not the cause... and the more you use them, the more resistant the yeast get to them. I am a guy. I didn't even realize that guys GOT yeast infections. But I'm learning... very fast. lol Good luck.

Anyone tried natural aloevera? Squeeze fresh aloevera and you should get a nice sticky lube.

I searched around and found expensive $50 molds on line, but then went to Walmart and found Ice Cube Trays that are elongated ovals! They are perfect and only about $1.25! I mixed 1/2 Tbsp Emu Oil [read the Emu label, it is a great healing addition] with 1/2 Cup Coconut oil, filled some cubes 2/3 and put tray into refrigerator. I then tightly covered the top of the tray with plastic wrap (leaving room above the cube spaces), popped them out and put them in a covered container in the frig. When I looked at them I realized they would equal about 2 Tbs of coconut oil and decided to heat a knife under the faucet to melt off a piece. [A cold knife produces shattered slivers.] Next time I will only fill to about 1/4 full and see if that is better. In addition to a vaginal lubricant, I use the rub a cube on my face as a night cleanser, too. I put the rest of the cube back into the frig for next time. Enjoy!!!

I just have to say.. Emu oil is taken from FAT from a dead EMU. Coconut oil on its own is just fine. I used to suffer from yeast infections all the time, until I cut meat and dairy out of my diet. And instead of using conventional lubrication, I heard about coconut oil, (organic, virgin.. etc) and I haven't had one in years. Or any other problems. BUT I don't know about anyone else here, but a little goes a long way.

I use emu oil also. Emu oil absorbs into the skin but still provides good lubrication, and has the benefit of being known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It is often used in massage therapy because it's good for the skin and reduces friction. So, the application for vaginal dryness seemed to be a natural choice.

It has always creeped me out to put oil derived from a dead animal in my most intimate places and thus I have avoided Emu oil. My husband and I use a liquid coconut oil lube called SemPure and love it. I have heard good things about Emu oil, but just can't get over the ick factor.

Does anyone know if coconut oil can prohibit pregnancy? I'm trying to get pregnant and want to know if it's ok. I figure a lubricant will help the little guys get up there. I was reading about olive oil as a lubricant and a doctor said it was a natural contraceptive. So I want to make sure coconut oil is ok. Any other natural tips on getting pregnant? I know about 400mg of folic acid, maca powder, prenatals....

Hey Jessica, I looked up what your doctor said about the olive oil as a natural contraceptive. It appears heavily to be a myth. Women in ancient Greece and Egypt were told they could use olive oil as a contraceptive. (but I don't think it worked too well.). There is no solid proof that olive oil is a contraceptive. Olive oil is not acidic enough to kill sperm (like vinegar is), nor does it contain crazy hormones that make you unable to conceive. So no worries :)

Wow!!This site was just enlightning, I happen to stumble on to it and stayed here, I had just bought a jar of Raw extra virgin coconut oil,and i wanted to become abreast of how to apply it in my personal area as i am experiencing the same problems of vaginal dryness and irritations.

Would it be suffice to use a insertion tube after cleaning it from another tubal medication designed for the vaginal area to fill with the coconut oil for insertion into the vaginal area, if so, how often should this be done for the relief of vaginal itching and vulva irritation, looking for relief as I stated before, I just purchased my first jar of raw coconut oil by looking at statements on this site, I will be here often.

@PAB: you might want to find out *why* you are having issues first. Scented detergent? Synthetic clothes?

You could just scoop up and rub on the coconut oil. You can find vitamin E suppositories at Whole Foods.

Thank u 4 that feed back, I have a herb nook near me, which is only a few blocks away, the whole food stores are really far away, can I purchase the E suppositories there? I do have a gyn appt in Jan.

HI THERE..I would like to know if coconut oil can cause any obstruction in pregnancy? Is it sperm friendly?

People's Pharmacy response: We don't know.

Coconut oil is antifungal so it's unlikely that was the cause of a yeast infection. If anything it would inhibit any infection and actually help to heal one.

My husband and I love it!
