Q. About a month ago my son-in-law started taking one regular Bayer aspirin each morning and one Bayer PM before going to sleep. Two weeks into this regimen he started bleeding from the mouth while he was sleeping. He stopped taking the aspirin and the bleeding stopped as well. Is this a possible side effect?

A. Aspirin can thin the blood by interfering with the sticky part of blood called platelets. Some people are especially susceptible to this effect so even a standard dose might trigger bleeding.

My husband takes an aspirin, that is a low-dose of 81mg as recommended by his dr. in the morning. The gentleman in the above Question was taking 250mg/2x day. Way too much.

I recently suffered a IA & am taking a generic (coated)ecotrin (ASA) 325 mg. every day as directed by the Neurologist.
Prior to this for the past 5 yrs. I had been taking a coated low dose ASA , 81 mg., every day.
have had no side effects.
Wonder if the coated ASA makes a difference ??

One extremely important bit of information that doctors fail to mention when recommending that patients take aspirin every day is that chronic aspirin consumption causes the individual to be considerably more susceptible to cerebral hemorrhage, due to the same blood thinning characteristics that cause intestinal bleeding. This is a serious and dangerous omission and makes taking aspirin daily not worth the risk in most cases.
