Q. I have had eczema ever since I was a child. I have used many steroid creams over the years, and while they help alleviate it a bit, in bad bouts those creams were not very soothing and just kept away the worst irritations.

I have been going to a young dermatologist who advised me to use CeraVe Moisturizing Cream (not lotion). I can't rave about it enough.

Immediately after bathing, I put it on and 24 hours later, when I shower, I can feel that the cream is still there. I have only had to use one of the prescription creams a few times since starting with this, over a year ago. Keeping my skin hydrated seems to do the trick for me.

A. CeraVe moisturizer contains no fragrance to irritate the skin, but it does contain ceramides. These are natural fatty compounds found in cell membranes. People with eczema frequently have lower levels of ceramides in their skin. Moisturizing can help keep eczema from itching and may boost the effectiveness of topical steroids when you do need to use them.

I have had eczema for more than 20 years. Lotions, creams and other treatments were of no help. In your column I read about CeraVe. A little over one week ago I began to use it.I t works and it is already clearing up the affected areas. Thank you for this valuable information.

I was diagnosed with stress-induced eczema about 10 years ago. I also went the route of presecription creams, and they did help a bit.

While working on stress reduction has been the most successful tool (I'm now a yoga instructor), two other things have worked: 1. Fish oil--Omega-3 complex/4000 mg day works for me (I thought I would need about 8000 mg) and 2. olive oil as a moisturizer - right after a shower... you can even use the spray kind. Ayurvedic friends had suggested coconut oil, but one day I ran out of coconut oil. I tried olive oil just because I had some. I found it works better (and is cheaper!).

It sounds like Cera ve isn't prescription. Where can I get it?

I too had eczema since childhood and found out 5 yrs. ago it was caused by dairy products, especially milk. Lo and behold, I eliminated all dairy and it disappeared... first time since about age 4!!! Went to countless # of drs., but found this out through alternative health doctors, Dr. Carrow and his wife, Dr. Deborah Ray via their popular Health Talk Radio program.

After numerous trips to a Dermatologist for Atopic dermatis that were a waste of money I, was told by a manicurist to try Sweet Almond oil followed by a hot paraffin wax dip . I experienced an immediate relief of the painful itching, cracking and swelling.I find if I use the Almond oil several times a day and the wax dip a couple of times a week I experience none of the painful conditions that I had before. I use the Almond oil all over and my skin is much smoother and softer. It has no smell and absorbs into the skin beautifuly.I will not be without it ever again..

I am 11 years old I have eczema ever since I was 4. this makes me miss out on a lot of school activities such as swimming this makes me get teased a lot. I can't wear t shirts or shorts because I feel self conscious about my self and it doesn't help that even my friends tease me.
