Q. Do you know of a home remedy for athlete’s foot? I have had a fungus between the fourth and fifth toe for quite a while.I was using Lamisil AT but it does not work well for me. The doctor also gave me clotrimazole and it too is not clearing the fungus. I am serving in Iraq and would like to try something that will give me results instead of wasting my time.
A. Readers have suggested a number of home remedies. Soaking the feet for 20 minutes a day in a foot bath with one part vinegar and two parts water is one. Adding original formula Listerine to this foot bath may also help. The herbal oils thymol and eucalyptol in Listerine have antifungal activity.
Another approach is to put Vicks VapoRub on the affected area. This product also contains thymol and eucalyptol, along with other herbal oils that appear to fight fungus on skin and nails.
One new product worth considering is called Miranel (www.miranelbrands.com). This over-the-counter cream contains the antifungal drug miconazole along with some of the same ingredients found in Vicks.
We’re told that urinating on your feet in the shower is an old military trick against athlete’s foot and foot odor.

I have put tissue between the affected toes and added a few drops of hydrogen peroxide then put my socks on. It seems that I only needed to do this two or three times.
Absorbine Jr. applied directly to the affected areas will clear up athlete's foot in about a week. It burns like Hades, but really works.
By the way, over-the-counter hydrogen peroxide killed my bad case of nail fungus. I applied it regularly for about two weeks.
I exposed the areas between my toes to direct sunlight. It worked well. Be careful not to sunburn the delicate skin. If you have trouble spreading your toes, use rolled bits of cloth to hold them apart. Careful drying after bathing is helpful.
Actually, I've had success with underarm deodorant. Just rub it on your feet just like you do your pits. Also, Lysol spray if you have it. Spray it directly on your feet anytime and into your shoes as soon as you take them off. Apple cider vinegar and tea tree oil are terrific cures for fungus and things that itch. I used tea tree oil to clear up a yeast infection on my dog and ACV to cure hot spots. I also put the ACV in their water. Helps keep fleas and other critters off.
