Q. How much calcium is too much? I take 1500 mg/day and my doctor wants me to add another 500 mg for my thinning bones. I drink milk and wonder if I may be overdosing.A. Too much calcium (2,000 mg/day) can lead to “milk-alkali syndrome.” The extra supplement might make you vulnerable to this complication that increases the risk of bone fractures and kidney stones.

The body can't absorb the calcium it is getting if you aren't getting enough magnesium.
I started with Psoriasis, and I always took a Vita Lea Vitamin with 500mgs of Calcium & Vitamin D 400mgs. included, every day and one in the evening before bed, and in the future years it became Psoriatic Arthritis. I have been taking almost 2,000 mgs of Calcium with Vitamin D. Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis consume your bones, so you have to keep up the buildup. Sometimes, instead of a vitamin I will take some cottage cheese, with All Bran, or a Dannon plain yogurt with strawberries or blueberries, etc.
But with my problem of Psoriatic Arthritis I must consume almost 2,000mgs a day.... I am now going to go to a Rheumatologist to check myself out. I am going on 78, and I keep going and going. I do Antique Shows, also Doll Shows, and we have a Doll Hospital in Massapequa. " FANATIC COLLECTOR" THAT HAS BEEN MY NAME FOR OVER 35 YRS. I DO NOT WANT TO STOP, I NEED TO KEEP GOING, AND I HAVE MY HUSBAND WHO IS 83, AND HE KEEPS GOING AND GOING, AND I CANNOT KEEP UP TO HIM.... HE does not take Vitamins every day, but he needs to, and he feels better when he does take them, but you know men are thick and they think that they do not need any help..... READ your column all the time. THANKS Olga m.
I am winning a long battle with arrythmia and congestive heart failure and have learned a lot!! About calcium, magnesium, etc I have learned that the source of each is much more important than the amounts. Whole foods and whole foods supplements are FAR better than synthetics or drugs. Dairy is not a good source of anything because of all the drugs that are fed to the cows. Also the RATIO of calcium to magnesium is very important. The best test for this is a red blood cell test. The ordinary serum blood tests are practically worthless. Red blood cell tests are expensive but the second best is a simple hair analysis. Many naturopathic doctors and most Chinese medicine doctors can do this for you. Mine does it for less than a hundred dollars and that includes the consultation.
For fibromyalgia, high calcium (1500-2000), 800 - 1200 Vit D, magnesium, manganese, CoQ-10, Vit E, and others. Ended up in the hospital with hypercalcemia from the calcium. A caution I never see. My Vit D level dropped as well ... then severe anemia ... new blood work next week and hope all's up to norms. Will begin Boniva after labs. Good news is bone density is improed. On prednisone 15 months for 4 pneumonias and O2 24/7. Good docs keep in touch with each other and track me.
www.thyroidmanager.org says that 2000 mg calcium is goitrogenic.
( 2 g calcium per day was associated with decreased iodide clearance by the thyroid. The action is unknown, but it may in some way make overt a borderline dietary iodine deficiency.)
After looking at my blood work, a cardiologist I consulted told me that my calcium and potassium levels were too high, and this could have consequences for heart health. I had been taking calcium tablets with magnesium and vitamin D, which I immediately stopped. I do eat a serving of non-fat yogurt daily and drink about two cups of skim milk. A friend who is a nurse said I just needed to drink more water. Could the test results have been caused by the blood being drawn after a night's fasting? I am a 64 year old woman, who is also concened about osteoporosis.
I was diagnosed this week by an othropedist with a very large calcification on my right shoulder (he took xrays and MRI). When I told him I have osteoporosis and take 500-1000 mg. of Tri Boron (cal/mag/D) -- he told me to stop. Also said that Actonel and Boniva do not help prevent fractures in osteoporosis... what are your beliefs on this?
can taking too much calcium carbonate cause parathyroid disease.?.i have to take 4x1250mgs a day after having duodenal switch 2 years ago .i have now been informed that my parathyroid needs retesting (bloods)because it was high.
thanks.
For the last two months I have been taking 1200 mg of calcium and 800 of D-3, per doctor's instructions, simply b/c of my age (63). Now I am noticing calcium deposits on my fingers (little hard lumps on the joints closest to the tips of my fingers.) I have researched this and found out they are called Heberden's nodes and can be caused by too much calcium in the body. I have stopped taking the supplements, but I wonder if the calcium deposits on my fingers will gradually go away now, or am I stuck with them? I was never warned of any negative side effects for taking calcium. Has anyone else had this happen to them? Help.
Thanks to Sally Field, this entire country is worried about osteoporosis, to the entire exclusion of their kidneys, and the damage done to them through too much calcium. Unless you have been diagnosed with severe osteoporosis, don't take more calcium than a multivitamin and a good diet will give you. Get plenty of sunshine and exercise, too. The main problem in this country is the one most doctors fail to address: we are too fat! They don't want to tell us and risk losing a patient.
The results of too much (especially isolated) calcium... or just about any overdone single element... can be extremely detrimental. After a sickly childhood and young adulthood, I finally realized that the best way to become and remain healthy is to consume reasonable amounts of a wide variety of properly raised whole foods... much, but by no means all, of it uncooked.
Throwing in some strengthening physical activity probably doesn't hurt either. It's worked for me for about 30 years... took me over half a lifetime to catch on, but I'm really enjoying this healthy feeling. Hope there are no major accidents in my future, The last medical doctor I needed was when our youngest child was born in July of 1982.=} Probably digging in the garden and eating carefully prepared fresh produce unadulterated by chemicals/GMOs are the main reasons.:)
