Living a long time is appealing, but only if the extra years can be healthy ones. Dr. Mark Liponis, medical director of the Canyon Ranch Resorts, says paying attention to the immune system can make a big difference. We discuss his thesis that managing the immune system to keep it from becoming overactive can slow down the aging process. He shares his seven steps for a healthier life—and we find out what barnyard animals have to do with it.

Guest: Mark Liponis, MD, Corporate Medical Director of Canyon Ranch Resorts and author of UltraLongevity: The Seven-Step Program for a Younger, Healthier You. His previous book, with Dr. Mark Hyman, was Ultraprevention.

Responding to Liz (2/22) about a gluten-free diet. Call 1-800-349-2173 and get the Bob’s Red Mill Catalog. They carry a lot of gluten-free products and often you can get your local grocery store to order some of them for you. I believe it is difficult to get enough fiber if you eat only the white rice substitutes (all high on the glycemic index) readily available. We have discovered millet, corn (think polenta), buckwheat, amaranth, quinoa and a host of flours made from various beans and nuts. With a little care and forethought, I believe we are eating (and feeling) better than ever. Good luck!

I am enjoying the recent programs, such as this one, that gives us the means to help ourselves with our own health and minimizes pharmaceutical drugs. Also I like that your programs include ways to prevent or ways to work with our own family doctors.
We need more prevention — and knowledge about the kind of tests (this was covered in this program). I certainly want to live longer and healthier! I intend to get the books by Mark Liponis that has the material and details of how to do this. Most individuals are not told of the safer choices and think that only the “drugs” will help, and they continue with inadequate information — and often conventional doctors do not know or tell them about safer, efficient choices.
We must pass into law the “Health Freedom Act” and
allow us to choose the therapies that we think are best for us. Many holistic physicians fear the harrassment and harsh penalties by the govenment when treating patients the non-drug way.

After recently being diagnosed with Celiac Disease I was wondering what effects this disease has on the immune system and what can be done with diet and supplements to improve or regulate the immune system?
