Q. Is it important to have a bowel movement at the same time every day? My late mother-in-law used to insist this was the most important health advice.
A. No one wants to be constipated, but not all healthy people need a bowel movement daily. Some people with excellent bowel function go every other day or every third day. Others need more than one daily trip to the bathroom.
The belief in the importance of a daily BM has led many people to use harsh laxatives, such as senna. We offer more natural approaches to achieving regularity in our Guide to Constipation.

Drinking lots of water has helped me in this area. I don't have much of a thirst reflex, so I have to consciously work at it.
I have suffered from constipation due to IBS for many years. Since I began to take 2,500 mg. magnesium every night, I have 2 runny stools and still need to use a suppository every morning between them. However, once that's done, I can live in comfort for the rest of the day. My hemmorhoids are happy as well! What a relief!
Once I began taking 3 metamucil capsules each evening after dinner with plenty of water and tried to drink decaffinated drinks during the day, I got my constipation problem straightened out. I have celiac disease and I don't think I get enough fiber in my gluten-free diet, so this has helped me a lot.
I take my meds with a glass of psyllium. my wife thinks I'm losing the effect of the medications. Is this correct?
PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE: IT DEPENDS ON THE MEDICATION, BUT SHE IS CORRECT FOR MANY OF THEM. IT WOULD BE SAFER TO SEPARATE THE DRUGS AND THE PSYLLIUM BY AN HOUR OR TWO.
