Q. I have tried many statin drugs for high cholesterol but had muscle pain with all of them. Two years ago my doctor prescribed cholestyramine. It is in powder form and I take one packet a day in juice or water. It is terrific and has lowered my cholesterol with no muscle pain.

A. Cholestyramine was a common prescription drug for high cholesterol long before the statins were invented. It binds to bile acids in the digestive tract, which leads to lowering of cholesterol. Side effects may include constipation, flatulence and digestive upset.

My family doc gave this to me when I had clostridium dificile and had explosive diarrhea. It worked when 2 1/2 months on the 'silver bullet' did not. It still works when I have diarrhea and now I am going to try it on my husband instead of statin drugs.

I used Cholestyramine b4 statins were widespread. I had a puzzling episode where I was getting extremely weak. Turned out Cholestyramine was absorbing my thyroid medication - need to watch timing & interactions. Also, not as effective as statins.

I have had a bout with c dif, took a round of vancocin, and have been on chlorstyramine for 2 days. What will this do to my nutrition? I have lost a lot of weight. What foods will help me regain at least some of the 24 lbs. I have lost and didn't need to lose?

I have taken Cholestyramine for 2 episodes, 3 months each time. I did not have bad side effects from it and it lowered my cholesterol.
This week my other doctor prescribed Zocor, for me, I took it for 4 or 5 days and boy, I was very sick, stomach upset, gaz, bad episodes of diarrhea, muscle pain, wekeness and nerve twitching. So I am stopping it today an checking with my Docotr if I can go back to Cholestyramine.

I recently started taking cholestryamine and seem to be doing fine with it. I have noticed that the bottom of my feet and toes and muscles seem to tighten up to where it hurts. Does this have anything to do with cholestryamine?

One other question - does cholestryamine have any statin in it, as I cannot have anything with statin.

would appreciate an answer

thanks
