Q. I want to thank you for writing about turmeric. I had psoriasis on my feet and my hands so bad that I lost all my nails on my fingers. I went to doctor after doctor to heal my psoriasis, but nothing worked.

When I saw the article I thought I’d try it. I started to put turmeric on my food and in my coffee. Within two weeks, my psoriasis had started to heal. Within three weeks, it had cleared up.

I have been free of psoriasis for six months now. My foot is no longer scaling and the nails on my hands have grown back. I told the doctor about turmeric. I guess he didn't believe me, but I know better.

A. Turmeric is a yellow spice that is an important ingredient in curry powder. A component of turmeric, curcumin, has anti-inflammatory as well as antioxidant activity and shows promise against psoriasis and other conditions (Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, Dec., 2004).

We have heard from many others that turmeric can help ease psoriasis. Some people are allergic to the spice, however, and those who take the anticoagulant warfarin should avoid it.

i have psoriasis on my scalp. I would like to know how much turmeric to use a day.

I have psoriasis over 90% of my body, and I am currently going through a "flareup." I can't afford insurance, but will gladly try anything. I need to know the recommended dosage of turmeric. Or how much I should add to food.

I have a severe case of psoriasis, all over me. Where can you get Turmeric?
Thanks,
Frank

turmeric/curcumin is wonderful; people can buy it in capsules in varying forms and combinations (instead of having to put it in tea or coffee, etc.). I take both the concentrated Curcumin with a high % concentration, and the whole herb with a little Curcumin concentrate blended in with the root, etc. (I combine them).

Turmeric is also being studied for helping combat Alzheimer's disease; I take Turmeric as a preventative and as an overall healthy addition to my diet. Again, it comes in capsules, and it is wonderful.

I have tried a number of times to take Turmeric capsules for its benefit as an anti-inflammatory--I have osteoarthritis. It gives me diarrhea, however. Could I reduce the amount taken and perhaps build up an immunity to this side effect?

I have the worst case of psoriasis that most doctors have seen. I have tried just about everything you can possibly try. I have had 2 courses of Amavive. The first time I had a little relief for about 6 weeks. The second time it did not help at all; in fact it came back worse than ever.

I have now been having laser and light-box treatment, painful but it has not improved at all. I am now desperate and am thinking of trying acupuncture.

Someone sent me a cutting about the
Indian herb Turmeric. Please let me know the best way to take take it and if I should take anything else in conjunction.

I've been taking turmeric for a week, one half teaspoon 3 times a day with meals. I looked it up on the web and that's what was recommended. Where can I buy capsules?

Have flareups of psoriasis for past 30 years. Sometimes over 60% of my body--including scalp. Have tried about everything. Read about turmeric before, but this article made me give it a try.

(I tried the capsules before--but they did not work--but then, unless you know exactly what is in each--and they differ with brands and are not regulated--it is difficult to know what you are really taking.)

You can buy turmeric at most major grocery stores in the spice aisle.

I put a napkin or paper towel under the cup, measuring spoon and the jar of turmeric--it can stain anything the powder or liquid touches.

The dosage is 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon--3 times per day. I started at 1/4 teaspoon--3 times per day for the past 7 days and am definetly getting results!!! This week I am going to the full 1/2 teaspoon.

I found that putting the dose in a coffee cup and then adding very HOT water until cup is 1/2 full (about 4 ounces) works well. Stir with a plastic or wooden coffee stirrer and then let steep (like tea) for 5 minutes. Stir again and then drink. If it is not mixed or there is a residue at the bottom of the cup--add a bit more water--stir and drink. This way you know you got the full dose.

On a business trip this week--I put the turmeric, a metal measuring spoon and stirrers with me in a plastic zip lock bag and was able to make it in hotel rooms and at a restaurant--just ask for 1/2 cup of hot water--with no problem.

I will keep you posted!!JJ

I have psorasis on my feet and hands and have been on Enbrel and it did not work. Also have coronary artery disease. will this have any effect with the meds I take for CAD? I also found info that this works good for psorasis when used as a topical 1% curcumin gel. If so, where can I get the gel?

I just found this posting about curcumin gel. Dr. Madalene Heng, a dermatologist, extensively researched curcumin gel in regard to psoriasis. You can find information on her studies by searching for her name.

I've just read about the use of turmeric for psoriasis. How much should I take, and how can I get it in pill form? My daughter is expecting her second child; she has psoriasis also--can she take turmeric? Also, what is the difference in taking turmeric and curcumin, or can you take both? Thanks.

I went through a study for Enbrel 3 years ago for 6 months, and it cleared up my psoriasis. The study was over after the 6 months and the free meds. It came back with vengence and also brought the psoriatic arthritis with it. I went on a cleansing diet after that for about 9 months, and nearly killed myself because of lack of protein. I went back on the Enbrel for a year and it worked, but after the year, I started getting the flaking on the elbows and knees again.

I have stopped the enbrel and am now on remicade infusions.

Do you think that using the turmeric will help?

My son is 8 years old and was just diagnosed last year with Planto/Palmar Psoriasis on his hands and feet after going to different doctors to find out what he actually had.

There are many drug and treatment options; however, we started him on turmeric pills every day since he can swallow the capsules with no problem. They are less messy. We also made a paste out of the powder in a styrofoam cup and stirred and applied it onto the bottoms of his feet with a popsicle stick and let it dry in about a half hour to 45 minutes. It just flakes off onto a paper towel under his feet. He either plays his video games or watches TV while this is drying, so he sits still for that long.

It actually heals it so that he gets instant relief from that one treatment. We took a break from the turmeric, and in about two weeks the Psoriasis started up again, so we just keep him on it. It's just like taking a vitamin every day, but it is a turmeric pill from the health food store.

Just be careful about using turmeric directly on your scalp. It can cause hair loss. My grandmothers never shaved their legs, yet never had any hair on their legs. Reason: they applied turmeric powder all over their bodies in the shower before washing it off.

Hi
I have been reading as much as I can on the internet after being told I had psoriasis [P] 6 months ago by my doctor. For six months he has been prescribing creams and lotion for my body and scalp. Then I saw this web page about turmeric.

I have been taking Turmeric for 3 days now. One teaspoon at night and 1 in the morning. After 1 day I quit the topicals and my itching had stopped. After 4 days my P has gone from my scalp completely and my body has started to clear. This stuff is the bomb! It is natural and safe and so much better than the topicals. Why aren't doctors telling us about this natural remedy, instead of just prescribing topical drugs.

All I can say is thank God for Turmeric!

PEOPLE'S PHARMACY RESPONSE:

Interesting testimonial. We want to remind people that in such large doses turmeric is no longer a spice but must be considered a drug. Please do let your doctor know you are doing this. We also worry about interactions between turmeric and prescribed medicines. There are reports of bleeding linked with turmeric and the blood thinner Coumadin (warfarin).
