Q. A friend of mine traveled in Costa Rica and now doctors think she has something called “jardia.” What can be done to cure it?

A. Giardia lamblia is a single-celled intestinal parasite that is a common hazard for travelers. Drinking untreated water from ponds, lakes, rivers or streams in the U.S. can also cause infection.

Giardia may lead to digestive distress, including diarrhea, nausea, cramps and flatulence. Doctors usually treat the infection with a prescription antimicrobial drug called metronidazole or a similar medicine called tinidazole. People taking such drugs must avoid alcohol during the five days of treatment for Giardia. Pregnant women should not take either medication.

I have H pylori and was wondering if anyone has gotten rid of it without taking the antibiotics. Also what your symptoms were.

It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I am a backpacker and always treat my water. I actually contracted the little booger in Mexico on vacation. It just caused me to have gas and the runs, not vomiting or anything like that.

I've had chronic giardia for 4 months now. I've taken metronidazole, Alinia and tindamax medications. I just finsihed a months therapy of metronidazole and have been instructed to take Albendazole and metronidazole if it reoccurs. Will this combination work and is it safe? If not what will work? I'm going crazy trying to find a cure.

I have had it for 3 years!!! I haven't been tested lately but if I don't have it, I still have symptoms exceptfloating poop. I took two doses of med. then a stool test that came up neg. I work withcut flowers from Colombia and Mex. where they probably don't wash thier flowers off with Sparklets water, don't ya know?! big story, lots of denial, and reasons I felt like I woud just quit moving one day. pure fatigue through and through!! HELP ME!

So far, I have fought it for a year. I found out that all my energy drinks and Multivitamins (its the B12 that they need) have kept the bug strong. Anyway, my last flagyl try was the 2gram in one day dose, and I have been chewing fresh garlic and a tsp or so of horseradish twice daily before eating the morn. and eve. meals. Bitters and Vermouth also have some properties to make stomach more acidic I heard, so I have sipped on those, sometimes with some Cayenne. Lots of intense flavors in my life, but I do feel like my body is gaining against the invader. Good Luck fellow sufferers.

I forgot to say that the Health food store treatments with wormwood and walnut hull were pretty good for me, but it was during the time I was definitely taking daily vit. B12, and therefore keeping the giardia strong.
I also took the supplement Walnut Hull, on its own as directed, and felt better with that.

I have gone to a lot of doctors. I went to India they did colonscopy and prescribed me for 40 days. They said you would be fine when I returned back home to Afghanistan. I still suffer chronic anus discomfort and excessive gas and diarrhea. I checked my stool two days ago they said you have cyst Giardia. I don't know in spite of taking a lot of metrenidazole and metodine medications I have acid indigestion anus discomfort and a lot of diarrhea also I am losing my weight every passing day. I am tired of giardia life, and stomach ache please help me dear reader and write something good that will help reduce the gas and kill all the germs.
