Q. I am desperate for non-drug ways to lower blood pressure. The medications my doctor has prescribed have way too many side effects. Do you have any information about this problem?

A. High blood pressure puts people at risk for heart disease, stroke, dementia and kidney damage. That’s why keeping blood pressure under control is essential.

You shouldn’t have to suffer intolerable side effects, however. Dizziness, depression, headache, nausea, insomnia, fatigue, erectile dysfunction or persistent cough should not be the price of normal blood pressure.

Finding the right medicine requires determination. Other approaches that can be helpful include weight loss, stress management, deep breathing, tea, grape juice, dark chocolate and minerals such as potassium and magnesium. We discuss both medications and non-drug approaches in our book, Best Choices From The People’s Pharmacy. We are sending you a copy.

There are a couple of non-drug therapies that have proven effective--as effective as front line drugs--that are available. The information on both is available at their websites. One is Resperate (a biofeedback deep breathing device) found at resperate.com. The other is a product (different technique) called Zona Plus, with info found at zona.com

Several studies have shown garlic to be effective in lowering blood pressure; but not the oderless kind. Crush fresh.

I am on several medications and always suffer side effects of most. After 4 b.p. Rx's, I did find one that had no side effects--have you tried Cozaar? It has worked beautifully for me for some years now.

Garlic has been known to be an effective blood pressure reducer.

Some people have great results from drinking a glass of Campbell's OR V-8 low sodium versions daily. Both brands have potassium and some doctors have been "prescribing"/recommending these two brands of LOW-sodium versions (with the potassium) to help lower blood pressure.

my husband was in perfect health and at 70 looked like he was 50. he was prescribed a combination of lisinopril and metaprolol and in less then 2 month he was a mess: all the possible side effects were there: fatigue, cough, weakness, 50 lb weight loss, loss of potency, loss of sleep, appetite, loss of desire to live, confused mind, blurry vision, loss of concentration, anxiety, depression, etc...

me and my 4 children cried to doctors to change/readjust his medication, but they said they just follow the procedure and tested my husband to the degree where he just fell of the stairs(accidentally or not - still the medication poisoning fault...) and died...4 month after he started that medication... and all the tests were fine... but he is gone now... our life is ruined.

i am a widow at 56 and 4 children still in school... we are all depressed now... but doctors don't care... they are after their next victim... all the insurance money was sucked out... and we are left behind with no life... and he was such an optimist...poisoned...destroyed...

doctors just refused to listen about side effects and do something about it... nobody cares...

therefore i don't think my comment is going to help... sorry...i feel excruciating pain that i could not prevent his suffering and tragic death... they just followed "the procedure"...
