Overcoming Constipation While Traveling

Q. I have been using an applesauce-fiber mixture I learned about from you. It works well to combat constipation.

Now I have to go abroad for two weeks. Do you have any suggestions on how to take this mixture with me? Constipation while traveling is a big problem, starting with the long flight.

A. Dehydration is a frequent result of air travel. It complicates constipation, so make sure you get lots of liquids. Sugarless gum can also help.

The mixture of applesauce, bran and prune juice you have found helpful needs refrigeration and will be too difficult to take with you. Instead, try something like psyllium cookies (Metamucil brand for example). Magnesium supplements are also easy to carry and should help with regularity.

This is not as natural or nutritious as your usual remedy, but for your 2 week trip, it is far more convenient. Try Miralax. It is a tasteless, over the counter powder you mix with any liquid.

The powder itself is very lightweight for easy packing. I would start taking it in small doses a week or so before you leave. Continue your other remedy. Increase Miralax as you decrease your usual. Miralax used to be prescription.

A drug rep. once told me many Gastero. docs, who had children of their own with problem constipation, used it for their kids, even adding it to soda pop! It really has no taste, but is probably not as strong as fiber, prunes etc. which is why I suggest starting early, before your trip. It is more portable than fiber, so just another idea for travelers.
