Q. I have heard that licorice is helpful with digestion. All I have been able to find is artificially flavored licorice. I assume this won’t work. Where can I find real licorice?
A. Real licorice can be found in health food stores as licorice root, licorice tea, licorice capsules or even natural licorice candy. We would not advise using it regularly, however. Licorice contains glycyrrhizin, which can raise blood pressure, deplete potassium, alter hormone balance and lower libido.
To use licorice for digestive problems, look for DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice). This is safer and has been shown to be helpful.

I have been on GERD medication for over 10years. I finally decided enough is enough and looked for more natural remedies. I have been told that going off of the Gerd meds will very often cause a rebound effect with excess acid causing more heartburn then ever. I found this was true so off to the health food store I went.
I found a wonderful woman who suggested George's Aloe Vera each morning (2 oz) and then DGL (deglyrrhizinated licorice) Voila...it is next to miraculous. Follow the instructions and hopefully others will be able to finally get off the prescription drugs. It has been a week and I feel very good. I know that I have to watch trigger foods and limit them but it is worth it.
