Q. My husband and I travel by car each year to Arizona for the winter and return home in spring. The trip is difficult because I have IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and often hold up our fellow travelers so I can get to a bathroom. At present I take Imodium, but that only works after a bout of diarrhea.

Is there anything I could take that would make our trip less stressful? It does not feel good to drive through the mountains with no rest stations on the horizon when my stomach is "erupting."

A. We don’t have any magic bullets to offer you, but we have heard from several readers that a probiotic product called Digestive Advantage IBS was helpful. It contains live strains of lactobacillus bacteria.

Here is what one reader had to say: “For years I have suffered with nausea and gastritis. Antacids and other stomach medicines did not help. Then my doctor told me his daughter has the same problem. A product called Digestive Advantage IBS helps her. It is under $10 at most drugstores. This product works fast and I have been totally well for months.”

I suffered from chronic diarrhea, and after a colonoscopy was "diagnosed" with IBS and/or lactose intolerance. The Dr prescribed colestid which gave me horrible gas and helped with the problem but didn't solve it. I quit taking it and started taking acidopholus on a daily basis and the problem has almost completely cleared up. I did find that if I took it at the same time as my blood pressure meds, my BP would rise, so I take the BP meds in the morning and the acidopholus in the evening.

A change in bowel habits led me to have a colonoscopy recently. My primary doctor had diagnosed lactose intolerance which was confirmed by the gastroenterologist. However, after the colonoscopy procedure my digestive track never seemed to get better even though I stopped all milk products in my diet. The gastro doctor suggested something call "Align" which is supposed to "build a natural defence against diarrhea, gas and bloating." But after 4 days on Align I was much worse. Do you know of anyone who has tried this product and stayed on it for more than a week? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
