This home remedy for arthritis pain has generated almost as much mail as the gin and raisins. One newspaper column reader related that her grandmother had been using it as long ago as 1945.

Purchase Certo in the canning section of your local grocery. It is a thickening agent used to make jams and jellies. Certo contains pectin, a natural ingredient found in the cell walls of plants.

There are two recipes: Take 2 teaspoons of Certo in 3 ounces of grape juice three times a day. As the pain disappears, this can be reduced to 1 teaspoon in juice twice a day.

An alternate approach is to use 1 tablespoon of Certo in 8 ounces of grape juice once daily.

I tried many home remedies and some, like drinking fiber and such can be not so fun. I found a site where I can get empty capsules for very reasonable price. Fill them with physilum husk, flax seed etc.. and take them with my daily vitamins.

My father was suffering from swollen hands, joints, etc. I felt so bad they just looked so painful. I received an advertisement for a book from PEOPLE'S PHARMACY that spoke of this remedy. I ran to the store and he has been taking it ever since. It is amazing. The swelling went down tremendously, making it much easier for him to move around. I am hooked on People's Pharmacy. Thank you.

I started using Certo & Welch's Grape Juice after I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my lower spine. It's wonderful! I wasn't 100% pain-free, more like 90% (without any pain meds), a huge improvement over previous weeks. To just regain some mobility without the constant aches I'd been suffering was a great relief. The pectin makes the grape juice more tart, which I prefer to its natural sweetness.

Does the liquid form of Certo work just as well?

I recently got the People's Pharmacy book as a gift for pledging to NC Public TV and was reading through the remedies. I've had a little arthritis in my left index finger. I'd tried laser treatments which helped a little, but didn't resolve it. I also have heard that a packet of Knox Unflavored Gelatin twice a day dissolved in the beverage of your choice is also very helpful, but can take up to six weeks to be effective. I like it with tomato juice but anything with pulp will disguise the feel of the gelatin granules as you drink it.

While the gelatin is also supposed to be good for hair and nails, DON'T ever get in a hurry and just dump the packet of granules in your mouth and head out the door. It combines with saliva to create an EXTREMELY powerful glue inside your mouth. Your mouth AND lips will get glued firmly together and it will take you about 15-20 minutes of dedicated work to get your mouth pried back open again. While this is certainly going to entertain your co-workers, I really think you might suffocate if you have a cold and can't breathe through your nose when you do it. I'm an EMT and you need to trust me on this. You will not be able to speak and we might not figure out you have glued your own mouth shut and be able to come up with an effective solution before you are hopelessly dead.

I was glad to read about the grapejuice/certo method but don't care for grape juice so I thought I'd try cranberry or pomegranate juice with pectin instead. I went with pomegranate since it's much lower in calories. It tastes really good, and after just 48-72 hours, the results are amazing! I can comfortably make a tight fist now, which means I can look forward to throwing punches in aikido classes again without jamming an arthritic knuckle. (And this remedy is not anywhere near as risky as pouring dry gelatin granules in your mouth!)

As an EMT, I'm definitely in tune with traditional, modern US medicine. From a medical standpoint this remedy has me stumped, but there is no doubt that it really worked quickly and effectively for me. I don't know if this mixture will affect other drugs or conditions, so check with your doctor before starting it.

I'll also be checking with the veterinarian to see if the pomegranate juice/pectin mixture is safe for the dog.

May 2005 I was diagnosed with Scleroderma at the age of 46. The summer of 2007 I was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN), a very painful facial nerve pain. My rheumatologist believes it is related
to my Scleroderma.

For the TN I was on different meds: July: steroids. These helped, but I could not remain on them. August: Lyrica. September: 1800 mg Neurontin. The Lyrica & Neurontin did not give me relief. Any source of heat & light gave me severe pain. Because of my triggers, I was limited as to what I could & couldn't do.

My eye doctor asked if I was open to new suggestions. Mid-October 2007 I stopped the Neurontin & started a regimen of Total-Inflamm tablets & flax-seed oil. Nov 23. 2007 my mother gave me a bottle of Welch's purple grape juice & a box of Certo. I started that regimen immediately.

As of December 10. 2007 to present I am pain-free! I am still doing the grape juice & Certo regimen with the Total-Inflamm tablets & flax seed oil, and remain pain-free!

I have horrible osteoarthritis in my knees and no insurance or money, so I've been researching. Just noticed yesterday that there is some evidence that medicinal leeches (ugh) placed on knees take away the pain for about 3 months in a lot of cases. Something in their saliva is a pain reliever not the fact that they're withdrawing your blood. . . Think I'll try the above remedies first.

I have had increasingly painful knees, particularly the right. My mother had the same. Two weeks ago, I started the grape juice/pectin therapy. I also started using Glucosamin/Chondroitin and Hyaluronic Acid at the same time. I'm going on a trip with lots of walking in May and June. Something needed to change so that I can enjoy my trip without the pain. Within two days, my knee pain is down to zilch. There is a reminder occasionally when I turn too quickly, but my goodness, what a difference, and I don't like grape juice very much. I'm taking the pectin with me to Europe hoping to find a daily glass of juice to use there. I'm just sorry my mom didn't find this remedy. She was in pain.

I could not find the granules but I did find a liquid form in the Certo. Is that the same?

I take the macaroons for diarrhea but would like to know should I take them before or after meals,by the way 2 of them dont work for me

I have been diagnosed with scleroderma (thickening of skin). Do you have any herbal remedies to suggest?

Doctor recommended rubbing castor oil on my arthritic knuckle and taking arnica for pain, slowly getting better, but I'm going to try the pecto recipe here. I still want to play guitar

I read about the "purple pectin" and began drinking it and it helped the pain of scleroderma and lupus almost instantly. I wondered though about the collagen that the pectin produces and how that affects the scleroderma? Would like to hear if anyone knows.

I have had arthoscopic surgery on both knees in 2000 and was told by the surgeon that he would replace both of my knees in 2005. I have been taking glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate and omega 3s for years and they have allowed me to continue praticing. I have only taken the grape juice and pectin for three days and I can absolutely notice a reduction of my chronic pain. I will be recommending this to my patients. I would sure like to have some explanation for this. Does anyone have a theory as to the mechanism?

I have fibromyalga & osteoarthritis, I was told to drink blueberry , grape, cherry or cranberry juice, which is supposed to help with the pains above. Do you have any info. on this. I was told it is the antioxidant it contains..Is this true...Should I drink some of those juices..Right now I`m drinking Blueberry juice...Please Help!

I read with interest the pectin remedy. I'm not a sweet juice person, so I'm gonna try it in my regimine of red wine. Might just solve 2 problems...either stop the arthritis pain or drink enough and I won't care.

My husband and I have been using Certo and grape juice for quite awhile now with good results. Stopped for awhile one time and when his knees started bothering him again we started using it again. I buy 100% grape juice, pour off about 4 oz. and squeeze one packet of Certo into the jug, cap it, and shake. We drink about 4 oz. every morning.

Does Certo come in Liquid form, and if not, is there a trick to mixing it as it clumps up and is kind of gross drinking the juice with the clumps....Thanks!

Can you tell me how much pectin to put in a 96 oz container of grape juice?

My husband is diabetic and has severe arthritis pain. Will the "light" grape juice and no sugar pectin work?

On November 4, People's Pharmacy made the statement that Certo was liquid pectin and they had not seen powdered Certo.

On January 2,2009 Peoples Pharmacy states to use 1 1/2 packets of Certo to 96 oz of Certo.

Isn't the packet the powder? Where would you find liquid pectin in a packet?

I'm confused by all the certo liquid/powder discussions. I'm in my 60's and spent my youth canning jams with certo, but it was originally a box with a packet of powder. Later there was a liquid form in a little bottle. Can we have some final clarification re types and amounts? Can other brands be adapted?

I have had frozen shoulder and been seeing an osteopath and massage therapist for months. Started on 1 tablespoon of Liquid Certo (it comes as two foil packets in a box) with about 4 oz of grape juice - 3 times a day and have had a vast improvement in my mobility. Even my osteopath was impressed. You can get powdered Certo in some places but it is easiest to use the liquid. I got 7 doses out of each packet.

I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis and bone spurs. I began drinking Certo [liquid] mixed with grape juice and after the very first day my joints no longer hurt. I was floored!

No drugs, no pain medicines needed. I have no pain. This is amazing...but I also started soaking raisins in gin, since I was desperate for pain relief. It takes 2 weeks to soak those raisins. However, this purple pectin works so well, I'll stick to it. It is truly amazing.

This is something I have heard of and am excited to try it for myself. I have MS., osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, neuralgia, neuritis, bursitis, COPD, emphysema, extreme pain as result of broken back, arthritis of spine.

I stay in extreme pain, cannot walk, (am in wheelchair). I take many, many meds, including neurontin (800 mg. three X day, Methadone four X day, and so on and so on. All these do not take away pain. Hopefully this will help some. Thanks for the info!!!!

I am a type II diabetic. Will the light grape juice work? Doe it have to be a fruit juice?

Is there any problem with drinking the purple pectin while taking other medications? I know that it is recommended to not take medicines at the same time as fiber drinks.

Does anyone know how much citric acid is in one table spoon of the certo?

Hi, I have been on the Certo for just one week.. I was in a car accident almost 5 months ago and have not been able to work.. I was in a work related injury a year and half ago, and 3 other MVA`s since 1999.. This is by far the best I have felt in a long time..

I have noticed a big change in my pain.. I also take the raisins and gin... I am still taking pain medication but am starting to take less now.. I am so thrilled that my pain is slowly going away , as I am now thinking of returning back to work in another month or so..

I am starting to sew again and hope to ride my motorcycle next yr.. I am a believer ... This is truly amazing... Annie from Canada :)

After 4 days of pectin and grape juice, my neck, back, and hip were pain free. I was able to sleep all night and do my job easily. Telling all my family and friends, using 1 teaspoon of pectin in 3 oz of grape juice 2 or 3 times daily become pain free.

I have residual lyme pain caused from babesia, erlichiosis and bartonella as well as the lyme. I was told I have slight arthritis as well. Nothing seems to truly help the joint point.

Because of the medications I am on - I am not supposed to drink grape juice. I would love to try this because it is natural - but can any other juice be used?

Thanks so much!

When I moved to Fl 7 yrs ago I was on anti-inflammatory medication. My Mother-in law told me about Certo and grape juice. I started drinking this twice a day and after two weeks I was pain free. I then went to once a day and I have not had any arthritis pain in 7 yrs. I don't drink it daily now but when I feel pain returning I start drinking it again and in just a couple of days the pain is gone. This natural remedy is so much better than putting drugs in your body.

I have been suffering from sciatica. The Dr. says my xray shows much spinal arthritis and this appears to be the primary factor in my sciatica. Is there evidence that grape/pectin can benefit this?

Hi tried just last evening the oral pectin 1 tablespoon mixed with 4 oz grape juice, and up all night with diarrhea, any suggestions ?? please reply

Can I mix one envelope of liquid Certo with 64 oz. grape juice for joint pain? That's all I could find at the store.

I heard about the grape juice on your radio show driving to the grocery early one Saturday morning and thought I would add it to my shopping list and give it a try. I have never done anything like this before. I think I heard about half of the story on the radio as I bought powdered pectin and I also had in my head you said 1/4 Tablespoon in 1-cup of grape juice every morning. I have been taking this for two weeks now and all of my knee pain is gone!

Strange... I also have a little arthritis pain in my right hand fingers but it has done nothing for that. But, I sure do appreciate the pain-free knees! No wonder some have been up all night with diarrhea taking a whole packet of Certo... cut back and see what happens. It also worked within hours for me.. Walking again!!

Could you tell me if sure jell works as good as certo with the grape juice?

I have stiff joints and pain. I read your column of June 14,2911 in
THE ROANOKE TIMES. I state a man purchased pure pectin from Pomona's
Universal, which I did. My question is how did he get the pectin to mix??
It came with calcium did he use that as well? This is to be mixed in water
and added to the fruit before making jam. They said that the pectin would
not work without the calcium. Now do I use that as well for the pain???

I used the pectin only 2xs with cherry juice, and the stuff really works!!!!
But the lumps are not very pleasant.
So any help you can give me regarding the mixing and the calcium will be
VERY greatly appreciated.

I use powdered pectin daily with water or in Citrucel, never juice. It works like a dream - no joint pain at all. My mother and grandmother were both very impacted with arthritis. My grandmother died from an infected knee replacement and my mother was in a coma for 3 months from sepsis from a knee replacement. Needless to say, when my knees began to hurt I was worried. I also take glucosamine and chondroitin, but the pectin seems to make more of a difference for me.

I've been using the Certo for 8 days and noticed a considerable reduction in pain in shoulders and hips and trigger points. Due to reflux I try to avoid acidic juices. I put one foil packet of Certo into a 64 oz jug and shake and refrigerate. Every morning and night I drink 8 oz and put in 1 packet of "True Orange" or "True Lemon" (found in the baking aisle) to flavor the water. There is no sugar in the flavoring so I think anyone with diabetes can use it, but do check first.

Just wanted to know if you were still taking the certo and grape juice and if it was still working for you.
