We love this remedy and use it whenever we feel a cold coming on.It came to us from a radio listener in the hills of West Virginia but originated with her grandmother in India.
Grind about half an inch of fresh ginger root into a paste and place in a mug. Add boiling water and "steep" for several minutes. Strain the clear liquid into another mug, sweeten, and sip. Our symptoms start to subside within about twenty minutes.
We drink this in the morning and evening, and our cold usually gets better by the second day.

I have used a similar tea for colds/ flu (I sometimes can't tell which is which). I use the ginger and add a clove of garlic and a jalepeno pepper all in a teapot of hot water. I drink the tea while having a bath, then wrap myself up in a robe and always fall deeply asleep. If I do it at first signs I don't get a cold (& it tastes much better than you'd think!).
I have a personnal experience of using ginger tea. For two consecutive years after a prolong, forceful cough (from one to two months) I totally lost my voice, and my ENT doctor diagnosed me as a case of chronic laryngitis; lozenges and other medication was prescribed but there was no relief.
Then I was told by the old women from our place to avoid cold drinks and to take "salabat" (in our dialect ginger tea) and then my voice returned. It is also good for sore throat and harsh voice.
I have had great success with fighting off colds by just eating raw ginger root also. It works almost immediately for me.
I must testify what a wonderful hot drink one can make from grating about 1 inch of fresh ginger, putting it in a little wrap of cheese cloth or in one of those mesh spoons used for tea leaves and letting it steep in a mug of hot water....Fantastic! Notably healthful and great for combating colds...a refreshing and spicy tonic.
Someone just told me about drinking ginger tea for a cold. It's miraculous. Within minutes after sipping the tea I got relief from stuffy nose and scratchy throat. I just sliced some fresh ginger and poured hot water over it. I added a little honey.
Re: ginger and ginger tea for colds coughing, etc.:
A few years ago I had a case of what my doctor called adult whooping cough; literally, I coughed for months. Nothing seemed to help. (Even the Rx cough syrup concoction did not work for more than a few days!)
A dear Aunt in Hawai'i heard my plight and sent me GINGER TEA mix; She said that healers there and other islanders use it for colds, coughs and respitory problems, etc.
When I drank the tea mixture it burned all the way down; it set my tummy on fire, but it SURE WORKED!
I was suffering from sore throat on and off (strep negative). I tried one inch of ginger with two cups of tea. Immediate relief. Thank God for ginger .
An ayurvedic teacher made ginger tea that had just a small pinch of turmeric with the ginger. It worked very well.
After a cruise, I was upset to find that solid ground felt like it was moving, which was very annoying, though it did not make me sick. A friend said ginger worked great for seasickness, so I sliced 3 slices of ginger root into hot water and let it steep. The ginger tea made the ground stop moving that same day.
i will tell you with honesty that ginger root tea works. i take a few slices of ginger and steep a few mins pour in a cup squeeze a good slice of lemon and a teaspoon of honey ..so good and it works. I also used it when i had cancer
I also make a tea with grated ginger; but for each two cups, I also add 2 or 3 pieces of star anise (from the spice aisle) and 2 small cinnamon sticks. I've read that star anise and cinnamon are beneficial to the immune system.
I always use fresh ginger roots each time I feel a cold. Immeditely after taking it I feel very good.
thank you so much ginger
the best way to make it is to slice a piece of ginger about the size of your fist into thin slices and put them in a Thermos. Then fill the thermos with boiling water and let stand for at least an hour. Strain and drink with honey or apple juice. I've been told that you don't want to actually boil the ginger. One thermos full before bed usually cures a cold in two days.
Ginger is fantastic...I started using raw ginger steeped with honey a couple of years ago for a sore throat...and it works wonderfully
I notice that the duration and severity of my colds are alot less when I include ginger in my treatment
I make a tea with 1 inch ginger, 2 Tbsp. lemon juice, 1 pinch cayenne pepper, and 2 tsp. honey or maple syrup for my colds. This was taught to me by someone who studied Ayurvedic medicine. I love the taste - it's sweet and spicy. Add the lemon juice at the end if you want to try it. Measurements are rough estimates - I just add the ingredients to taste.
We were visiting a friend in Palm Springs and her husband had a cold, he was coughing so bad till late at night and I remembered one member of my family using the ginger tea. I got up and told my friend to boil ginger and add lemon and honey, he drunk it very hot and low and behold it stopped the continuous cough.
I have inflamed and constricted bronchial tubes from a case of bronchitis I never completely recovered from. In addition, I recently got a respiratory virus that's going around my campus. I haven't stopped coughing for a couple of days (even on anti-coughing medication). My Malaysian roommate just gave me a cup of ginger tea and this is the first time all day that I haven't coughed continuously!
I was taught a variation and it really works...
slice some ginger and cut an orange or two and throw it into a pot peel and all
add sugar to taste...add a few cups of water
Boil and let cool to taste..
drink at will, your cold will disappear
When my first son was about 5 months old, I was very late with my cycle. I told my Mom and she told me to drink some hot ginger tea. It was bitter tasting so I doctored it up with sweetener and downed it. The next morning, my cycle began!
I have a problem with taking prescribed pain medications. I get very nauseated and vomit. My pharmacist recommend I try Ginger tablets for the nausea and it helped me a great deal as long as the dosage of the pain medication wasn't too high.
I have noise in my head constantly for four years. does any body know any home remedy for this?
My husband is an organic farmer here in Puerto Rico. He says that since he was small the best cure for the cough that comes along with a cold or the flu has been ginger. He says that the "warmth" that the ginger provides is what cures.
My mother has always boiled the ginger in a small amount of water and then adds milk with honey. It tastes very good and works miraculously.
I drink Birt & Tang Ginger Tea is amazing, everything you need in one tea bag...
Ginger is amazing! I had this really dry cough that went on for three weeks. I've tried antibiotics, mucolytics, bactidole (gargle) and anesthetic lozenges but they didn't work. Guess what, my father suggested that I chop some ginger, chew them like candy and leave them in my mouth and suck the juice out of it. I did this for a day. The following day, my cough was gone.
I just got over the swine flu this week. At the first site of what I thought was a cold I drank lots of ginger and lemon tea. I believe it helped to fight off the swine flu as I recovered fairly fast compared to other people, not to mention I have asthma. I've had far worse flus than the swine flu. I think the ginger and lemon tea def had a role in that.
